Mazda MX-5 RF arrives in Malaysia
At This point, it is no secret that the Mazda MX-5 RF has made its way to our shores. The RF is the latest addition to the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 in Malaysia. We checked out the sporty coupe at the Mazda Malaysia showroom in Glenmarie to find out what it’s really about.
The RF stands for Retractable Fastback, and is distinguished from its soft top sibling by its foldable metal hardtop. Contrary to the manually-operated soft top MX-5, the RF’s hard top is electrically-powered and can be operated by a toggle switch on its centre console. It is indeed hassle-free, but I’d prefer the ol’ skool fabric soft top instead.
The Mazda MX-5 RF is available with a choice of 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder SkyActiv petrol engines. Our version comes with the latter. The naturally-aspirated engine is good for 158 hp of power and 200 Nm of torque. While the soft top MX-5 is only available in automatic transmission, this hardtop RF is the first ND MX-5 that is available with the option of either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.
With adaptive LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, keyless entry, automatic air-con, cruise control, MZD Connect infotainment system, a seven-inch touchscreen, nine-speaker Bose sound system and 17-inch wheels, the equipment list is identical to that of the MX-5 Roadster.
The MX-5 RF is now available for booking, ahead of its official launch. Price-wise, the soft-top retails at RM219,999. So expect the RF to be priced RM20,000 to 30,000 more, with the manual transmission expected to be slightly less expensive.
