2018 Audi A8 revealed

KUALA LUMPUR: After a series of spy shots and teaser images, the German automaker, Audi has finally revealed the 2018 version of A8. The updated flagship model features an all-new aluminium spaceframe chassis with incorporation of carbon fiber for improved strength and reduced weight. The car is internally tagged as D5 and it is reported to feature autonomous driving.

At the front, a bigger and bolder single frame grille attracts the onlooker while the 2018 A8 ditches the rectangular lights and features hexagonally shaped units. The signature LED daytime running lights are kept intact which grants this executive sedan a slight touch of aggressiveness. The consumers will also get an option of Audi laser lighting and HD Matrix LED headlights. The side profile has been crafted with well-proportioned creases which are more prominent over the outgoing model. Even the roof line is sleeker than the predecessor, which improves the overall appeal of the sedan in an effective manner.

The rear profile has also received its share of update and now, it is completely different from the previous version. The wraparound lights are now connected by a piece of trim which makes the taillight a single piece. This design scheme will be soon reflected on the upcoming A6 and A7 as well.

The occupants are greeted by a new MMI (Multi Media Interface) system that features a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. The black-panel look of the screen turns it into high-gloss black surround when not in use. The cabin also gets a standard Audi Virtual Cockpit which transforms the instrument cluster of the car into a multi-information display which also boasts a navigation screen. At the center, a second touchscreen display is fitted that can be used for accessing the air conditioning and comfort functions.

According to Audi, this is the first car from the German automaker which is evolved for highly automated driving. With Audi AI traffic pilot in action, crossing traffic becomes easy at up to 60 kmph on highways. This system is operated via AI button on the center console. This new AI traffic pilot is capable of controlling the accelerator, steering, and brakes. Audi claims, with this system, the driver need not focus completely on the car.

The updated A8 will be offered with a total of four redesigned turbocharged V6 and V8 engines. The range includes a 3.0 TDI with 286 PS, 3.0 TFSI with 340 PS, 4.0 TDI with 435 PS and 4.0 TFSI with 460 PS. In addition to this, there will be also a W12, 6.0-litre engine for mind-boggling power experience. Audi has also put an e-tron model in the lineup which will be a combination of a 3.0-litre V6 engine and a powerful electric motor. The combined unit will be able to deliver a maximum power of 449 PS and a peak torque of 700 Nm. All the variants will be coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive system.
