2019 Toyota Camry – All you need to know
The Toyota Camry was first introduced to the world way back in the early 1980s, even though that nameplate was already being used as a name extension on the now extinct Celica. Just like the tough and rugged Hilux pickup truck, the Camry has turned out to be one of the all-time automotive legends, and today, it enjoys tremendous success and audience base. Fast-forward to 2017, the Japanese automaker unveiled the all-new, eighth-generation Camry. Unlike some of its predecessors, this new one was built around Toyota’s versatile TNGA platform. Just like most markets that it operates in, the Toyota Camry has had an almost unblemished record in Malaysia as well, surpassing that of several of its other well-established rivals with ease.
The all-new 2019 Toyota Camry was welcomed into Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) in late 2018 and was soon made available for purchase. However, the 2019 Camry is currently only sold in one variant - called the 2.5V, and is priced at RM 196,888. Despite lacking a variety of versions and trims, the Toyota Camry enters into the battlefield quite fearlessly, and against the likes of the Honda Accord, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, and even the far cheaper Proton Perdana. With the meat & potatoes out of the way, let’s get into some of the finer details of the 2019 Toyota Camry.
Exterior design
Compared to the models of yore, this eighth-generation Toyota Camry is one of the best-looking sedans that are currently out there. To help pave the way for the new Camry, the Japanese carmaker has left no stone unturned and their “all guns blazing” outlook has clearly worked. Starting upfront, the 2019 Camry makes use of Toyota’s latest “Keen Look” design language, sporting a well-creased bonnet, wide yet elegant two-piece grille, sleek and fashionable headlamps, and a beefy bumper with its brash styling and small LED fog lamps. The D-segment sedan’s 4,885 mm length, 1,840 mm width and 1,445 mm height draw out an almost high-end looking silhouette, something its precursors could never be.
Along the sides of the 2019 Toyota Camry, there are swooping lines, smart contours, and a distinct greenhouse design - the latter surely makes for some keen observation. The stylish door-mounted wing mirrors, chic 18-inch alloy wheels, pronounced slope of the roof and the chunky C-pillar combine to make this a pretty slick looking side profile. The game of contours and creases continues to the rear of the Camry, too, where there’s a boot lip spoiler, striking LED tail lamps, and a chrome boot garnish. Speaking of which, the overall boot capacity of the new Camry is just below 430 litres.
Interior
Just as with its exterior, the interior of the 2019 Toyota Camry has come several leaps & bounds from where it once resided. The brand has evidently put much effort to revamp this space, thus making it feel far more upmarket and premium than it has ever felt before. The swooping lines and contours, along with an interesting blend of elements and materials have injected a sense of occasion into the cabin of the new Camry. The quality of materials and fit-and-finish has also gone up considerably, with the inclusion of soft-touch surfaces and good quality switchgear. There’s enough room for all occupants - though really tall passengers may find their head scraping against the sloping roof. Thankfully, the seats are extremely pleasant and provide ample support, and ironically enough, even if you’re a tall individual. Meanwhile, the extra layers of insulation mean that this is now one of the quietest rides in its class.
Equipment and features
The 2.5V trim of the 2019 Toyota Camry specs sheet comes equipped with Automatic Bi-LED headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, radar-guided cruise control, power & auto-retractable wing mirrors with memory, smarty entry with push-start ignition, leather upholstery, powered front seats and steering, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, powered rear sunshade, wireless smartphone charging pad, 7-inch multi-information display, colour heads-up display, 8-inch touchscreen head unit with in-built navigation, and a 9-speaker JBL sound system to name a few.
Among its many safety-related tech and gizmos, the 2019 Camry incorporates all-round parking sensors with a rearview camera, seven airbags (front, front side, curtain & driver’s knee), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and ISOFIX anchor points. However, the 2019 Camry also features Toyota Safety Sense, which ropes in Pre-collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, and Automatic High Beam (AHB).
Engine and performance
While some international iterations of the 2019 Camry get upgraded engines and transmissions, the one lone variant that’s currently sold in Malaysia does not. It’s still powered by the tried & tested 2AR-FE, 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. This naturally-aspirated motor churns out 181 hp and 235 Nm of torque and comes mated to a pretty old-school 6-speed (instead of a new 8-speed) automatic transmission that spins the front wheels. However, this 1.5-tonne Camry’s straight-line performance is nothing to frown upon - as it goes from a standstill to 100 kmph in 9 seconds flat, running out of steam only at around 210 kmph -- not too bad at all for a non-sporty, D-segment family sedan.
