2019 Toyota Prius to feature an electric AWD

KUALA LUMPUR: The 2019 Prius, comes with some, all for good changes. The most selling hybrid from the Japanese automaker has been given a facelift. With already a dynamic design, the car Prius by no means looked old or outdated, but a few touches are welcome.

2019 Toyota Prius Front Angular

The rather dynamic design has been partially ditched, we’d say. From the side, the front resembles a beak, the winglet like headlamps also make way for some silky narrower units. At the rear, the taillamps are now broader instead of taller, and also have been integrated into the tailgate as well. The number plate is now housed in a trapezoid-shaped slump. With the dynamic approach now downscaled, the Prius, however, still looks grand.

Move inside the 2019 Toyota Prius, and you will see the similar interior from the last generation model. There is, however, an optional 11.2-inch touchscreen which has been stacked vertically. The layout of the centre console along with other elements on the dashboard has been given some minor tweaks. Additions on the inside include turn-by-turn navigation display on the head-up display, new upholstery, and a bigger wireless charging tray.

2019 Toyota Prius rear Angular

Talking about the protagonist of the story, it is the new electric all-wheel-drive system. It the same E-Four system which Toyota uses in the Japan-spec Prius. The electric AWD is achieved with the help of a high-output motor that has been connected to the rear wheels. If conditions are slippery, the AWD system can be utilised up to the speeds of 70 kmph. The hybrid system still features the 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle VVT-i petrol motor. This engine produces 98 PS of max power and a peak torque of 142 Nm. Coupled with the petrol mill is a pair of electric motors which is good for 72 PS of power and 163 Nm of peak torque. 123 PS is the combined output of the petrol engine and the electric motors. Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride) battery has been used in the electric AWD version of the Prius. The FWD (front-wheel-drive) variants of the Prius continue to feature the standard lithium-ion battery.
