Geely unveils the Vision Starburst concept, inspired by the cosmos
KUALA LUMPUR: Known to the world for its technologically advanced cars, the Chinese automaker Geely has recently come up with its new Vision Starburst concept. It previews the brand’s new design language that will be used as a design board for its new range of electric vehicles. Geely says the styling is inspired by "stellar phenomena," like creased body lines inspired from "stellar rays."
At the concept’s unveiling event, Vice President of Geely Design Shanghai, Guy Burgoyne explained, “The Expanding Cosmos philosophy serves as a constant inspiration for our designers to discover a new and holistic design language that satisfies our ever-expanding and increasingly-diverse range of customers. In search for this DNA in the new digital age, we have pushed the boundaries of technology and innovation. Like the birth of a new star, the ideas from our talented team of global designers combined, fused, and erupted, resulting in the birth of a new design expression, a new vision, our Vision Starburst.”
The Vision Starburst exhibits the new design philosophy with a unique front grille that has lighting elements arrayed around its perimeter. The grille is edged by angular air intakes and vertically positioned LED daytime running lights. And, the place where headlights are usually located, the car has sensors that are called its true "eyes" by Geely. At the rear, this futuristic concept gets vertical tail lights connected by a horizontal lighting element.
On the sides, the Geely Vision Starburst has suicide-style scissor doors, and illuminated wheel arches. The latter reflects the vehicle’s status; it illuminates different colours while charging and when the car is parked or in motion. Not only this but the illuminated wheel arches are also synchronised with the interior ambient lighting. According to Geely, the lighting interaction between exterior and interior creates “a sense of speed and a new driving experience” for the users.
Inside, the concept shows off a two-spoke steering wheel, a tablet-like infotainment unit, four individual seats, and a floating centre console. The latter features a geometric shifter with four different lines of light illuminating different colours to show the gear settings.
Well, the Vision Starburst will not be made into a production vehicle, says the automaker. Many aspects of the design philosophy will be applied to Geely upcoming cars.
