India-bound Volkswagen Taigun SUV teased ahead of launch
KUALA LUMPUR: Do you remember the Volkswagen Taigun concept showcased at the 2020 India Auto Expo? That show car has now been transformed into a production model and will be soon hitting the Indian roads. The German automaker recently teased the upcoming SUV on its official website and on social media handles that reveal the car’s front fascia.
Based on Skoda-Volkswagen’s new MQB A0 modular platform, the VW Taigun has been specifically created for the Indian market and will be heavily localized for offering competitive prices. That’s because it falls in the highly lucrative mid-size SUV segment in India and will be facing off against the popular Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
In terms of design, the SUV shares a lot of elements with the global T-Cross, however, it is longer, wider, and taller than that. Also, it rides on a longer wheelbase, creating more space inside the cabin. On the front, it features chrome highlights on the honeycomb-patterned grille, and a chrome bar above the lower air-dam running across the width that surrounds the fog lamp housings. It gets LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, sculpted bonnet, and black plastic cladding. Other highlights include the masculine wheel arches teamed up with multi-spoke alloy wheels, dual-tone ORVMs, and roof rails.
In the concept form, the interior is finished in a dual-tone color scheme with contrasting treatment and incorporates an all-digital instrument console, a large touchscreen infotainment system, connected car features, wireless charging, automatic air-conditioning, and so on.
As confirmed by the automaker, the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun will be powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine capable of generating 147 horsepower and 250 Nm of peak torque. For sending drive to the front wheels, a 7-speed DSG automatic will be there. For safety, features like multiple airbags, cruise control, ABS with EBD and BA, and a parking camera are expected.
The Volkswagen Taigun will be officially launched in India sometime around the debut of the Skoda Kushaq that also underpins the same platform.
