KDesign AG render’s new Volkswagen Golf R

KUALA LUMPUR: Render image is a thing in the automotive industry, with independent artists trying their best to draw the real thing (or the closest version). The latest car picked by Silva is the new VW Golf R, the hot hatch that has been ruling the segment for quite some time. The latest version of the car is confirmed for launch later this year. And the vehicle has been spotted on numerous occasions with very little camouflage, thus encouraging artists to create a render.

Though VW has introduced the R lineup for many of its models, including the Polo R WRC, Passat R36, and Touareg R50, only Golf has succeeded in being Wolfsbug’s performance division permanent member. This year Volkswagen will be introducing four new R models - the Tiguan R, Touareg R, Arteon R Shooting Brake, and Arteon R.

The Golf R doesn’t showcase the most striking design in the performance hatchback segment, but that’s one thing many people like about it. It surely gets wide, aggressive air vents at the front and quad exhausts at the rear, but when held next to the Civic Type R it looks quite bland. Overall, the VW Golf has a subdued appearance.

Earlier VW was under plans to use Audi’s 2.5-litre inline-five turbo powertrain for the new Golf, but somehow it didn’t work out. Now, the new Golf will come with the familiar 2.0 TSI unit. In the Tiguan R and Arteon R, this mill churns out 315 hp of maximum power, so in the hatch, it won’t pack more punch for apparent reasons. As the Golf R is lighter than the two crossovers, it should result in better performance.

The official debut of VW Golf R is expected to occur after the premiere of the Golf GTI TCR.
