Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+ unveiled: Here’s all you need to know
Mercedes-AMGs first all-electric series production model has been revealed and it is called the EQS53 4Matic+. And this new luxury performance car will serve as a flagship model for the Mercedes-Benz range of bespoke EVs and the EQS. Also, we hear that following it will be a range of electric cars for AMG, the list includes EQ models with the EVA2 platform and AMG models with AMG.EA architecture.
Now, before we get into the car's styling, let us first discuss its under the hood configuration, as there's a lot to talk about.

Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+: Power & performance
The AMG-EV features a fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel system and has two electric motors (one on each axle). In the base version, these motors churn out a maximum power output of 658 PS along with a peak torque of 950 Nm. When compared to the non-AMG EQS 580 4Matic that makes 523 PS and 855 Nm, this one is obviously a step ahead.
Coming to acceleration, AMGs first full-electric sedan can complete a century sprint in just 3.4 seconds (the EQS 580 4Matic does the same in 4.3 seconds). Its top speed is rated at 220 kmph (210 kmph for the EQS 580 4Matic).
Moving on, the all-wheel drive system monitors the driving situation continuously and even distributes torque between the axles. All this ensures optimum traction throughout.
As for the driving modes, the Comfort one promises maximum efficiency, while the Sport and Sport+ focus more on greater lateral dynamics.
Still, want more? Well, for speed enthusiasts out there the automaker is offering an optional AMG Dynamic Plus package. Speaking of which, the output here goes up to 761 PS and 1,020 Nm. It is available via Race Start mode and goes from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.4 seconds, after attaining a top speed of 250 kmph.
What's behind such great power and performance figures? As per Mercedes-AMG such strong power and torque figures come to the frame thanks to the model-specific e-motors with stronger currents, new windings, and new actuation. Ensuring consistent performance throughout is a more robust thermal concept with a so-called 'water lance' to cool the rotor.
Making under the hood setup even more efficient are initiatives like -
- Special ceramic ribs on the stator
- Needled-shaped ceramic pin-fin structure on the inverter
- An additional transmission oil cooler
Enough about the power delivery, the powertrain even boasts energy recuperation, up to 300 kW when braking (with adjustable level of recuperation selectable via switches on the steering). Also available is the optional Drive Pilot system that automatically decelerates the car on detecting vehicles ahead.
The saved energy is returned to the 400-volt, 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Now, while the usable energy content is the same as the EQS 580 4Matic, the AMG EV gets specific wiring supporting its high-performance capabilities.
Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+: Charging & more
As standard comes the 11-kW onboard AC charger that can be upgraded to 22 kW. DC fast charging of up to 200 kW is also supported and with a capable charger, it can regain an additional 300 km of range, in just 15 minutes. Speaking of range, its WLTP-rated range reads 580 km, that's way less than the 676 km offered by the EQS 580 4Matic.
Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+: Braking & suspension
Guarding the Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+ suspension front is the four-link front and multi-link rear suspension. The AMG EQS features the AMG Ride Control system that combines air suspension with electronically controlled, adaptive dampers. With two pressure relief valves, the air suspension setup called in for greater adjustability.
The electric sedan comes with a compound brake system with 415 mm disc and six-piston callipers at the front and 378-mm disc and single-piston calliper at the rear.
Furthermore, the sedan's turning circle and agility are enhanced via the rear-axle steering of up to 9-degrees. It operates at a speed below 60 kmph, beyond which the rear alloys steer in the same direction as their front mate.
Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+: Design
Look at the EQS53 4Matic+ and tell us you don't see any resemblance with the regular EQS with AMG Line exterior kit.
At the front is present Panamericana design on the black panel grille with AMG lettering. On the front fenders, we see the 4Matic+ badge.
The sedan showcases the same 0.23 drag coefficient as the regular EQ, however, it comes with small tweaks that maximise efficiency during dynamic and slow driving. For instance -
- Front splitter
- Air curtains on the bumper
- Flics & fins on the air intake
- Rear diffuser with six fins
- AMG side sill panels
- 21- or 22-inch aerodynamic wheels in Heritage or Aero designs
- Large rear spoiler
Mercedes-AMG EQS53 4Matic+: Interior
The AMG full-electric sedan showcases a very familiar cabin, however, it does get some unique bits like -
- AMG seats with individual graphics
- Microcut microfibre and red contrast topstitching
- Artico man-made leather upholstery
- AMG performance steering wheel
- AMG branding on floor mats, sports pedals, and door sill trim
- Nappa leather seat cover (optional)
- MBUX Hyperscreen (three screens across dashboard)
- AMG Dynamic Select driving modes
Also, part of the kit is AMG Sound Experience with two versions - Performance and Authentic.
The AMG Night Package Dark Chrome offers a plethora of optional features like AMG Track Pace, red brake, AMG carbon trim elements, and red brake callipers.
More information will be provided by the automaker as the AMG full-electric sedan nears arrival. Till then stay tuned with Zigwheels Malaysia.
