Mercedes-Benz to be fined for diesel-related violation
KUALA LUMPUR: Looks like the German automaker, Mercedes-Benz is in some major trouble. With whom you ask? Well, it’s with the prosecutors from KBA in Stuttgart, and they are going to penalize Daimler, a Mercedes-Benz parent with a staggering 800 million to 1 billion euros. The fine is related to a diesel violation that started with the Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI crossover.
The Germany vehicle regulator has already begun a formal investigation into the matter after a new device was discovered in Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI.
According to a report from a German newspaper, the regulator’s investigation is focused on another ‘illegal defeat device’ that has been installed in approximately 60,000 cars manufactured between 2012 to 2015 with the exhaust emission standard.
KBA, the German motor vehicle authority has discovered cheating software fitted to Mercedes-Benz E-Class and C-Class cars and it has ordered the carmaker to recall around 280,000 affected cars.
The Stuttgart prosecutor is considering to find each vehicle with 5,000 euros, said the report.
Further, a KBA spokesman said that the investigation is still ongoing and is most likely to continue next year as well.
Daimler is still numb on the matter and has refused to comment until the investigation is over.
