Mitsubishi Outlander: Features explained

Mitsubishi Outlander: Features explained

The Outlander is the only proper 7-seater SUV available in the Malaysian market from Mitsubishi. The Outlander is no new name for many car lovers not only in Malaysia but in other parts of the world as well. With its Outlander, Mitsubishi has tried to plant its feet firmly in the 7-seater SUV segment in the country. The Mitsubishi Outlander has even won the Carsifu Editor’s Choice Award 2016 for the Best Mid-Size, 4x4, 7-seater SUV. So, let’s see what the latest model of the Outlander has to offer.

LED headlamps

Mitsubishi has provided the latest iteration of the Outlander with a set of nicely designed LED headlamps. These are full LED units and provide a good amount of illumination of what’s ahead. They also come equipped with LED daytime running lights. These add to the overall style quotient of the car. However, the catch here is that the LED headlamps along with the LED daytime running lights are available only with the 2.4L variant.

MIVEC engines

For the Malaysian market, the Mitsubishi Outlander specs share its two engine options. The first one is a smaller 2.0L engine that produces 145 PS of power and 196 Nm of torque. It is the same engine that we’ve seen in the Mitsubishi ASX. The other engine option that is more powerful is a 2.4-litre unit tuned to churn out 167 PS of max power and 222 Nm of peak torque. This should be sufficient enough to get this heavy SUV going from a halt. Both the MIVEC engines are mated to a CVT unit for power transmission.

Multi-select 4WD system

The fact that the Outlander comes with a 4WD system as standard, makes it one of the most affordable SUVs in the segment to offer that feature. Mitsubishi has also added different driving modes that work with the 4WD system. These modes include 4WD Eco, 4WD Auto, and 4WD Lock. These three different driving modes should be enough to take you through and back any kind of road conditions.

Driving video recorder (DVR)

This is an interesting and useful feature that Mitsubishi has incorporated in the Outlander. This is basically a camera that captures every moment while you’re driving. This could really come in handy in case you meet or see any unfortunate incident. Also, it could double up as the daily action cam that you can use to record daily observation and/or your weekend trip. You don’t need to stick a separate action cam to do that for you.

Apple CarPlay support

The new 7-inch touchscreen audio display on the latest model of the Mitsubishi Outlander supports Apple CarPlay. This really makes it easy for the user to connect its iPhone with the car’s audio system and play music. It also aids in easier navigation. However, we would have liked to see the support for Android Auto as well because a majority of the people use Android-based smartphones.

Large cargo space

With the third row of seats upright there isn’t much space for the luggage, but Mitsubishi provides you with an option of folding down both the second and third rows that increase the cargo space to 1,608L. This is the best-in-class cargo space within the 7-seater mid-size SUV category.

All-around monitor

This feature uses multiple cameras located around the Outlander to present you with a bird’s eye view of your ride. This is a cool thing to have when you've got quite a big SUV. It enables you to park easily in close parking spots and even enable you to maneuver through the narrow streets without scratching your SUV.

Safety features

Mitsubishi Outlander Safety

The new Mitsubishi Outlander comes with a plethora of safety features that you’d expect from an SUV of its size. It has 7 airbags, Active Stability Control (ASC), Traction Control (TC), Hill-Start Assist (HSA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Rest Reminder, Rear-View Camera, Parking Sensors, etc.

Outlander rear

There are many more features of the Mitsubishi Outlander that makes it a desirable 7-seater. As far as the pricing is concerned, the Outlander price here in Malaysia starts at RM 132,109 for the base model with the 2.0L engine.
