Norway aims to hit 100% EV sales in 2022

Norway is planning to shift to electric vehicles sales in 2022 completely. Moreover, they are getting ready to remove the new diesel and petrol-powered cars by as early as April 2022.

If we look at the data of monthly new car sales released by Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council (OVF), it can be noticed that the last vehicle with a combustion engine is ready to leave the dealership in April 2022. It’s almost three years ahead of what the Norwegian government targeted.

Norway EV plans

They wanted to phase out the sales of new diesel and petrol cars by 2025. Thor Egil Braadland, a Norwegian government representative, said, “Sales of new petrol and diesel cars are dying out in Norway. If the trend continues from the last four years, sales will be over during the first half of 2022. It is far earlier than even the most optimistic electric car enthusiasts thought possible.”

According to sources, even if the new car sales are going down, the majority of the people in Norway still own a used diesel or petrol car. Another interesting fact is that if we look at Norway’s top 15 selling cars in the year 2021, the top 14 positions were taken by fully electric vehicles.

The latter is a great sign as it will help the government phase out diesel and petrol-powered vehicles by the early next year. However, the sale of used petrol and diesel cars will still be possible. According to data, six out of every seven cars sold in Norway are used cars.

Erik Andresen, Norwegian National Association of Car Importers, said, “But the small petrol cars will be replaced first. The bigger and more powerful the car, the greater the chance that there are customers who need one of these that are constantly delivered with a petrol or diesel engine.”

Due to the tax incentives, even the major carmakers are now willing to shift to complete electrification of their lineup.
