Perodua kick-starts the year by selling 20k cars in January
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's largest car manufacturing company, Perodua has started the year by selling 20,100 cars in the first month itself. A surprising number of 1,025 units for the recently launched Aruz SUV was registered on the last day of the month. The SUV had witnessed a pre-booking of around 8,000 units.
Apart from the Aruz SUV, the other models from the brand contributed equally by selling in good number. The Myvi sold the highest number of units at 8,400 in January, followed by Axia with 5,500 units, and Bezza with 3,400 units. Alza also added an admiring figure of 1,600 units to the January sales report list.
According to Perodua Malaysia managing director, Datuk Zahari Husin, there has been some delay in the registration of the vehicles. Despite that, the company managed to maximise the delivery of Aruz in order to keep up with the expectations of the Chinese New Year break. He further added that with the pending official figures from MAA, the company estimates a market share of around 41.7% in January.
Moreover, it has been a clear improvement of 9.2% over the units sold in December 2018 and the figure was 18,400 vehicles. Compared to the previous year, Perodua’s January 2019 sales is 13.6% higher.
“The strong demand on Aruz has resulted in some waiting period, especially for the AV variant. We are doing our best to reduce this waiting period to a more acceptable level,” said Zahari. He also refuted the rumours claiming the chances of increase in the Aruz price due to high demand.
