Perodua Myvi: What makes it desirable?

The Perodua Myvi has an almost legendary following in Malaysia - one that not many can match. Having been introduced to our market for the first time back in 2005, the B-segment Myvi has tasted record success in this market. Perodua, the leading carmaker in the country, launched the latest iteration of the Myvi in late 2017.

With its proven track record and following, it wasn’t long before this hatchback went on to become a sales blockbuster -- a feat which its rivals haven’t been able to match yet. Prices for the 2019 Perodua Myvi starts from RM 42,790 for the entry-level G trim with the manual transmission, and ends at the RM 54,090 range-topper - AV trim with the automatic gearbox. While it’s a favourite amongst many Malaysians, what makes the Myvi so desirable? Well, let’s find out…

Interior space

Perodua Myvi SPACIOUS CABIN

Being a family hatchback isn’t easy. You have to be able to accommodate expectations, as well as real people -- something the Perodua Myvi is really good at. So, if you were to extrapolate its exterior dimensions, they would result in figures of 3,895 mm in length, 1,735 mm in width, 1,515 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm. The new Myvi is 205 mm longer and 70 mm wider than the model it replaces. Also, in spite of sitting lower to the ground, the distance between the axles means that the Myvi has a cabin that allows five occupants to be seated without much fuss. Also, another benefit of that wheelbase and smart internal packaging means a boot space of litres - which is quite impressive.

Depending on the variant, the Myvi’s seats can be arranged in a variety of ways - with over 8 ways of configurations. Meanwhile, Perodua has improved the Myvi’s noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels as well, which includes an acoustic windshield to dampen wind noise. This feat was accomplished by adding more insulation layers all around the structure. More importantly, occupants can enjoy the hatchback’s improved elbow and knee room, courtesy of the generous dimensions.

Fuel efficient and capable powertrain

Perodua Myvi engine

The Perodua Myvi is powered by a 1.3-litre or 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, both paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission, with the exception of the entry-level 1.3 G variant, which can be equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox. If you are really into frugal driving and don’t care much about brisk performance, you’d be glad to know that the 1.3-litre powerplant in the Myvi (along with the automatic transmission) is capable of returning a fuel economy of up to 21.1 kmpl - one of the best in its class. However, if average fuel economy is a passable factor for you and you want a little more kick when you slam on the throttle, you can always look at the Myvi with the larger motor. The 1.5-litre four-banger puts out 106 horsepower with 140 newton-metres of peak torque, and can still provide you with a fuel economy of 20.1 kmpl - that’s with the 4-speed automatic slush box handling transmission duties.

Ride quality

Perodua Myvi rear

While it’s important for family hatchbacks to be fuel efficient and practical, they need to be comfortable to travel in as well. The Perodua Myvi was not only designed to be spacious and frugal, the engineers were also tasked with making it as comfortable as practically possible. As with many cars in its class, the Myvi is equipped with independent MacPherson struts up front, and semi-independent torsion beams at the back. However, the Malaysian carmaker has tuned this setup to near perfection. On the Myvi, Perodua has been able to hone the suspension to suit the conditions on our roads. This means that their rebound and compression rates, plus all-around characteristics are sound enough for a car in this segment. Perodua managed this by incorporating new and beefed up front and rear stabiliser bars, reworked front lower arms and stiffer rear setup for the suspension.

Domestic effort

The all new and current generation of the Perodua Myvi was developed and built from the bottom up in Malaysia - making it a truly, blue-blooded Malaysian product. While the earlier generations of the Myvi could trace their origins back to the Japanese Daihatsu Boon, something that’s no longer a matter of contention with the new model. Perodua has also worked extensively on improving the Myvi’s safety record, something the manufacturer has achieved by using high-tensile steel in much of the construction - making it much safer than the iterations that existed before it.

Safety features

2019 Perodua Myvi Airbags

Scoring a perfect 5-star crash safety rating at the ASEAN NCAP, the new Perodua Myvi is one of the safest cars in its segment. It boasts some segment-first features such as Perodua’s Advanced safety assist (ASA) technology. This means buyers can reel in the goodness of safety nannies such as Pre-Collision Warning (PCW), Pre-Collision Braking (PCB), Front Departure Alert (FDA), and Pedal Misoperation Control (PMC). On top of all that, the new Myvi gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Hill-start Assist (HSA), and all-around parking sensors with a rearview camera.
