Proton, Altel, and ECarX join hands to develop car connectivity tech
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian automaker Proton has joined hands with the local telco company Altel and the Chinese company ECarX Technology. Under the arrangement, the three companies would be jointly developing car connectivity products and techs. The final output will be put to both local and regional use.
The three firms entered into an agreement ceremony that was held under the careful eye of Eddin Syazlee Shith, Malaysia’s deputy minister of communication and multimedia along with Miao Wei, who is China’s minister of industry and information technology. Also, present at the event was Li Shufu, Zhejiang Geely chairman.
With this new tech agreement in place, it would be now possible to have local R&D as well as the production of car connectivity features and digital services. It is believed to be a crucial step towards the future of the brand’s automotive sales. Also, telematic services and network connectivity management would be developed for Proton cars under this deal.
It was only yesterday when Proton announced that it’d soon start the production of Proton X70 CKD unit. With the agreement now in place, Proton can now increase the level of local parts in the SUV.
Datuk Syed Faisal Akbar, Proton chairman in April, informed the touchscreen display in X70 would be revised and updated as part of the introduction of the SUVs CKD unit. The said Geely Smart Ecosystem (GKUI) also recently received an OTA update to address a few concerns.
Though no details are shared yet, we believe that with localisation, both the car and techs would benefit. Among many things, the maps would be revised for local navigation, as the system in the CBU unit of X70 is based on Geely Baidu, developed in China. Also, the same is the case with Exora RC, 2019 Persona, and Iriz, therefore the move will also prove beneficial for these cars.
Another benefit of conducting local R&D comes in the form of reduced cost and low dependency on foreign parts. Syed Faisal during the signing ceremony said, “Collaborations such as this will allow us to gain a foothold in the rapidly progressing area of car connectivity solutions while also increasing the knowledge base of our R&D engineers. It also allows us to explore the possibility of expanding our connectivity solutions to Proton’s export markets, particularly in neighboring ASEAN countries.”
