Tesla Cybertruck-rivalling Canoo electric pickup revealed

KUALA LUMPUR: So, here comes another electric pickup truck in the arena where several other big names exist. We are talking about a US-based startup Canoo that has expanded its lineup of forthcoming EVs by unveiling a snub-nosed electric pickup, which is unnamed for now.

The electric pickup is based on the company’s multi-purpose platform architecture that already underpins the other two Canoo vehicles. Using one platform for many vehicles has become a common approach among the EV makers, including General Motors and Volkswagen,

In terms of design, the Canoo electric truck sports a rounded, snub-nosed front fascia with similar light and design setup that is seen on the electric van the automaker showcased last year. It sits on 18-inch wheels shod with 265/60/R18 tyres. The EV incorporates a configurable bed with a pull-out extension increasing its length. A roof rack and a camper shell with a roof-mounted tent would also be available as optional accessories.

Size-wise, the EV measures 4,677 mm in length, 1980 mm in width, 1920 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2850 mm with the bed measuring 1817 mm x 1627 mm x 2,600 mm. The bed has a depth of 522 mm. 

The Canoo projects the electric truck “to be the most cab-forward and space-efficient on the market, with massive cargo capacity on the smallest footprint possible.” The interior revealed by the teaser video shows a seating capacity of two persons. It houses several easily accessible power sockets to charge devices.

Speaking about the technical specifications, the upcoming truck has been engineered for single as well as dual-motor configurations. The dual setup will be mated to an all-wheel-drive system and will offer more than 200 miles (322 kilometres) of cruising range and as much as 447 kW of maximum power and 746 Nm of peak torque. The maximum payload capacity of the model is rated at 1,800 pounds (816 kilograms).

In the US market, Canoo's electric pickup will be available for pre-order in Q2, 2021 with the first customer deliveries expected to begin in 2023.
