UMW Toyota records YoY jump of 22% in 2021, gears up for Corolla Cross Hybrid launch
KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota is hitting new sales records all around the world. It recently dethroned General Motors and became the USA’s best-selling automaker in 2021 by selling a total of 2,332,262 units. In Australia, the Japanese automaker continues to hold the top-seller tag for straight 25 years; the sales record in 2021 stood at 223,642 units. Coming to the home, here also the renowned mobility brand ended 2021 on a high note. It sold 72,394 cars with a YoY increase of 22%.

Toyota Vios continues to be the best-selling Toyota model in Malaysia in 2021, accounting for 31% of sales.UMW Toyota Motor sees a 9% increase in month-on-month sales with 9,289 units sold in December 2021. It is 0.5% higher than the 9,246 units sold in the same month last year.
Being the top non-national automotive brand in the country, Toyota enjoys leadership in the overall non-national, B-segment, pick-up, and hatchback segments.
If we talk about the best-selling Toyota model in Malaysia in 2021, it is none other than the Vios accounting for 31% of sales. The Hilux, on the other hand, continues to reign as the bestselling pickup truck in Malaysia.

Now the company is geared up for 2022 with many exciting plans in the pipeline. One of them is the launch of its first locally assembled hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. Its launch is scheduled to happen on Jan 14, 2022.
“Malaysians are in support of green technology and environmental sustainability, and this is evident as the orders for the new Corolla Cross Hybrid are continuing to rise since we opened for bookings in October. This shows that sustainable mobility is the way forward as the world collectively shifts towards clean and renewable fuels, as well as innovative and intelligent vehicles,” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor.
“The launch of the new Corolla Cross Hybrid will mark a significant milestone for UMW Toyota Motor which will also pave the way for the energy-efficient vehicle (EEV) manufacturing industry in Malaysia,” Takeyama added.
