Upcoming Kia EV6: A Korean EV with a strong safety shield
KUALA LUMPUR: After enjoying the success of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Malaysian automotive market is set to welcome its cousin, the Kia EV6. Yesterday, we got a surprise preview of the upcoming electric car at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club. While the EV has already won a number of awards for its design and tech, it has now grabbed the highest stars in terms of safety.

The Kia EV6 comes equipped with a number of passive and active safety systems such as multiple airbags, stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, ISOFIX child seat mounts, lane-keeping assist, intelligent speed limit assist, a 360-degree camera, blind spot detection, and more.In the latest round of crash tests conducted by the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program), the all-electric Kia EV6 scored a perfect 5-star. The crash test has been categorised into four segments, in which the EV grabbed the following scores.
- Adult Occupant - 90 percent
- Child Occupant - 86 percent
- Vulnerable Road Users - 64 percent
- Safety Assist - 87 percent
So what safety bits ensure the safety of passengers sitting inside the 2022 Kia EV6?
The electric car comes packed with front, side, curtain, and front centre airbags, a mandatory centre airbag, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, stability management, and rear passenger seatbelt reminder.
Keeping the child safe are ISOFIX child seat mounts positioned on the outer rear seats, which offer good protection in the case of frontal impact tests.
The EV received 87% in the safety assist tech; credit goes to a slew of active safety features, including lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, intelligent speed limit assist, a 360-degree camera, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot detection, an adaptive cruise control system, and a driver attention monitoring system.
Further reducing the chance of an accident is an Augmented Reality Head-up Display, which provides all the important driving info and instructions in the driver’s line of sight.
However, if any collision occurs by chance, the advanced eCall system of the electric car gets activated automatically and alerts the emergency services. It also applies the brakes after an impact to avoid further collisions.
