Updated Mazda6 breaks cover at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017
KUALA LUMPUR: After teasing the updated Mazda6 a few weeks back, the premium sedan has finally made its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017. The 2018 Mazda6 gets a sleeker exterior profile with a refined cabin to give a better experience to the occupants. The Japanese manufacturer has followed Vision Coupe concept for exterior styling and features a new grille design at the front. The headlights are even sharper that accentuates the low stance of the sedan perfectly. There is no separate fog lights housing as they are now integrated within the headlights.
The side profile is also refreshed with new wheel design and will be offered in 17-, 18- and 19-inch sizes. Just like the front profile, there are some minor changes at the rear which include slightly redesigned taillights with a pre-dominantly red finish. There is a new color scheme, Soul Red Crystal, which will be available with the 2018 Mazda6.
The cabin is refreshed with the new fit and finish with the steering wheel and some trim pieces being carried forward from the outgoing version. The new front and rear seats are wider and offer improved support. These seats also feature vibration-absorbing urethane with a unique design to keep the passenger’s spine in the natural ‘S’ shape. In addition, the front seats also come with cooling function. The dashboard looks simple yet elegant with new aircon vents, automatic climate control, and an 8-inch Mazda Connect infotainment display.
Under the hood, the Mazda6 will be offered with a 2.5-litre SkyActiv inline-four engine with 185 PS of maximum power at 5700 rpm and 250 Nm of peak torque at 3250 rpm. It will be offered with either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The engine comes with cylinder deactivation feature that allows a driver to run on only two cylinders when running under light loads. The second option is a 2.5-litre turbocharged SkyActiv four-cylinder engine that is borrowed from CX-9. It is capable of producing a maximum power output of 253 PS and peak torque of 420 Nm.
The bigger engine unit will be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission only. The other features of 2018 Mazda6 include 360-degree view monitor, 7-inch TFT screen with gauge display, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop&go function and Active Driving heads-up display. The updated Mazda6 will first go on sale in the US market in January 2018, followed by other markets.
