Volkswagen extended the production halt till April 19
KUALA LUMPUR: From the past few weeks, most of the world is fighting against the coronavirus pandemic. Several counties are locked down due to this. The impact of COVID-19 is apparent in the automobile industry; the production facilities of all the carmakers are halted in the infected areas. The German automaker, Volkswagen, had suspended the manufacturing units at its domestic plants for two weeks in mid-March. But, a week ago, the firm extended the halt till April 9, and now it announced that the plants would remain closed till April 19.
Volkswagen stated that due to the coronavirus pandemic, a severe decline in demand has been witnessed and the supply chain has also been affected. Thus, the decision of extension has been taken. The suspension will affect the manufacturing of all the product lines of Volkswagen, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and group components.
Meanwhile, the firm intensively prepares for the resumption of manufacturing units and keeps on planning the new strategies. It has decided to end the short-time working of about 80,000 employees of Volkswagen AG. Moreover, the firm intends to strengthen the protection of employees significantly.
In this context, Andreas Tostmann, a member of the Volkswagen brand board of management, said, “The health of our employees has the highest priority. We are making good progress with an extremely comprehensive package of measures for the staged run-up of production. This also includes additional measures as regards hygiene and distances between employees on the production line.”
The other automakers around the world have also taken similar moves. Toyota has extended the suspension till April 20 in North America. Aston Martin has also decided to halt the manufacturing till April 20 in the UK. In Malaysia, all the car and bike manufacturing units are halted until April 14.
