Volkswagen ID.4 images leaked ahead of the official debut
KUALA LUMPUR: If you have been waiting for the showcase of Volkswagen’s first electric SUV, the wait is over. Here’s the ID.4 EV in front of you. The leaked images of the SUV undisguised have surfaced ahead of its expected debut later this year.
Volkswagen sent the said images to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as part of a process that all automotive companies follow to get approval for models in the country. But it seems that folks at the ministry intentionally or not, have leaked out what Volkswagen intends to hide till public debut.
However, the design of the ID.4 is not surprising. It shares design traits from ID.3 hatchback, and ID Crozz concept revealed earlier. The major design picks include illuminated VW logo, connected headlamp design, and sloping roofline. The leaked shots also show three different designs of alloys.
The electric SUV is based on VW’s MEB (Modular Electrification Toolkit) platform that will be the foundation for the company’s future EVs slated to launch by 2025.
The interior images of the electric SUV are still under the covers. But as per the VW’s earlier statements, we know that it will house a fully digital cockpit operated by touch-sensitive sensors and voice recognition. The ID.4 specs sheet is also likely to get a head-up display, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and the augmented reality (AR), as it has similarities from the ID.3, so might borrow these features from it.
For mechanical set-up, Volkswagen has stated that it will be initially sold with a rear-wheel-drive powertrain, which could deliver the same 204 PS and 310 Nm as the ID.3 hatchback. However, an all-wheel-drive version would be included in the future with 306 PS and 320 Nm output levels. The driving range of ID.4 would be up to 500 km, according to Volkswagen.
The official premiere of Volkswagen ID.4 was initially supposed to be at the New York International Auto Show in April, but it was called off due to coronavirus. At the moment, no date for the official unveiling has been announced by VW, but it is likely to happen soon.
