VW sold around 6,700 unauthorised cars to the customers
KUALA LUMPUR: The German automaker makes headlines again for yet another disgraceful reason. According to a report by a German media portal, Handelsblatt Today, the company was involved in shelling out test cars to the customers in Europe and the US as new or used units from 2006 to 2018.
The cars, which were supposed to be scrapped were sold to around 4,000 German customers as new or used cars. The total count of vehicles sold without the approval from motor transport authorities is around 6,700. The remaining lot was sold to customers residing in other parts of Europe and North America. A VW spokesman has confirmed the reports. This is certainly an alarming sign for all the members associated with the VW group as well as the customers.
As per the report, the CEO of VW Group, Herbert Diess, was informed in July 2016 about the ongoing problem. It took two years for him to make the authorities as well as the customers aware of the fact that some cars sold between 2006 to 2018 did not have proper licensing.
The spokesman at VW said that the company was unaware of such incidents and the recall has been initiated to find out how the test cars were different from the ones that were approved by the Motor Transport Authority.
The head of consumer rights group, VZBV, Klaus Muller said, “The fact that these are VW models built between 2006 and 2018 shows that Volkswagen has not understood anything, even three years after the diesel scandal became known.” He spoke of another “failure on the part of management.”
