Build and material quality is top-notch
For a five-seater SUV, the Proton X70 feels fairly large and is big enough to put some seven-seater SUVs from one segment above. The Proton X70 is the longest in its class, which dwarfs some SUVs from one segment above, thus giving the Proton X70 a much expensive feel on the outside.
In terms of comfort and convenience, features on the inside, the Proton X70 really outclasses all the SUVs in its category. The X70 feels plush on the inside as well, thanks to the sturdy build quality and impeccable fit and finish, which wasn’t totally expected from a mainstream car maker like Proton.
Due to having the largest dimensions in its category, the Proton X70 feels incredibly spacious when it comes to interior. The legroom, knee room and head room at the rear are comparable to really premium sedans, and thanks to the sliding backrest, the rear seat feels very comfortable even for much longer travel runs.
No option for AWD
While the Proton X70 is quite big enough giving it an intimidating stance, the overall design is not that eye-catching and distinctive. While the side profile, as well as rear profile, still manages to look quite unique, the front end of the X70 looks quite pale, if going by the segment standards. The grille too looks very simple for a car of this category.
While there is no question on the levels of space on the inside, the rear seat lacks under-thigh support a bit, which robs of some of the comfort to the rear occupants. The short length of the rear bench might be a bit of a trouble to tall passengers.
While the engine feels very responsive and powerful for an SUV this big, the 6-speed automatic transmission of the Proton X70 feels a bit sluggish and doesn’t feel as exciting to drive while shifting gears as in other premium SUVs.
