Overview

The 2018 Kia Picanto, which was launched at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) has taken the automobile world by storm and is the only non-national car in this entry segment. The older model of the Kia Picanto TA also won the 2015 MCOTY’ Budget car of the year, which indicates a lot about the prospective success of this model as well. The interior of this stylish hatchback beats several other competitors in the same segment. Kia has come a long way in Malaysia, and it won’t be much of a surprise if the 2018 Picanto wins the MCOTY’ Budget Car of the Year award again. The hatchback did not take any time in gaining popularity owing to its stunning interior and other features. The car belongs to the A segment and has several competitors in the Malaysian market including the Perodua Myvi & Proton Iriz. The only variant that is announced is priced at RM 49,888 with a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty without insurance.

Interior & Features

The interior of the car is absolutely wonderful and Kia has also made a few changes to make more room inside the hatch. The lower step height makes it easier to enter and exit the hatchback and the base of the dashboard has also been moved upwards by 15mm for more knee room at the front. The angle of the rear backrest is also more reclined now to ensure a better-relaxed posture for passengers. The interiors of this car are expected to be quite appealing to people and is expected to lure a multitude of new customers.

The dashboard of the car features a 7-inch infotainment screen equipped with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This makes it the only car in this segment to support these features. The Korean manufacturer has also increased the depth of the boot floor which can handle 255 litres. The rear seats of the car also go down which increases the boot capacity to more than 1000-litre. The size of the steering wheel has also been reduced, and now it houses a three-spoke sports steering wheel which is very comfortable and feels really nice!

Exterior

The Kia Picanto 2018 is a wonderfully designed car with LED daytime running lights and LED signal repeaters that are all housed in a single headlamp cluster.  Similar to other cars by Kia, this model has retained the “Tiger Nose”, which is similar to the previous model except the glossy black finish with chrome trimming. The hatchback also provides better aero efficiency because of the air vents installed on the front bumper. The rear of the vehicle has noticeable changes; the reverse light is located on the lower left side of the bumper with shorter LED rear combination lamps. Apart from the changes in lighting, the side view mirrors are now full enough to reduce the blind spots to a bare minimum. The car has been designed by former employees from giants like Audi keeping the requirements of today’s youth in mind. The difference in the design of the Kia Picanto can also be noticed through the eyes of a commoner since it is based on an entirely new platform which has 2400 mm wheelbase and is now 15 mm longer. The front wheels of the vehicle have also been moved a little to the corners to enhance the overall stance of the vehicle. More space for the cabin and trunk has been created without changing the measurements of the car which still stand at an identical 3,595 mm length, and 1,595 mm width respectively.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

There is no change in the engine of the car, and it still offers the same 1.25-litre Kappa four-cylinder engine, which makes 83 hp at 6,000 rpm and 121.6 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The real difference is that the engine makes lesser noise while providing the same performance. The company offers only a 4-speed automatic transmission for this vehicle in Malaysia. The car also has a bigger fuel tank which can hold 35-litre of petrol and has a maximum mileage of 24 kmpl, as claimed by the manufacturer.

Braking & Safety

The car has several features of safety including 6-airbags, ABS & Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, ISOFIX, Hill Start Assist and all this is covered in a chassis made up of 44% Advanced High Strength Steel. In addition to the safety features, the car also has keyless entry, a start/stop button and multi-function steering wheel.

Verdict

The Kia Picanto is being recognized as a fantastic product for the market, and the stylish hatchback is speculated to win some awards and give fierce competition to its rivals. The car is appropriately priced, and the buyer will cherish every last penny spent on this vehicle. The car is more spacious, better at performance, more stylish and its competitive price is sure to give its competitors a run for their money.  We recommend you to purchase the new Kia Picanto 2018 if you are looking for a starter vehicle for someone young in your family.

    My daughter’s drive

When my daughter turned 18 and wanted a car to test her newly acquired driving skills, my wife and I wanted to purchase a compact city car for her. She also wanted a car that looked as exciting as it worked, and we wanted something in a small budget. We brought home the Kia Picanto, and were thoroughly impressed with Read More
