Triumph Tiger 800 Review 2024

Triumph motors is going strong in Malaysia with its Modern Classic range of retro bikes. To further strengthen its market position the company launched six updated models of the Tiger 800 series featuring 200 upgrades, both mechanically and aesthetically.

The adventure bike is offered in two ranges and total six variants - The off-road oriented XC range features the XCx and the XCA, while the road-oriented XR range includes the XR, the XRx, the XRT and the XRx LOW. In terms of looks, the latest Tiger 800s are not very different from the outgoing models, though they now feature LED DRLs and a five-position adjustable windshield. Nissin brakes and switchable ABS have been offered as standard. All the Tiger 800 models are powered by 800cc, liquid-cooled, 12-valve, DOHC, in-line, three-cylinder engine that churns out 95 PS of max power at 9,500 rpm and peak torque of 79 Nm at 8,050 rpm, mated to a six-speed gearbox. Noteworthy upgrades include ride-by-wire throttle (except the base model XR), TFT instrument panel, cruise control, traction control and three different riding modes (top-end XCA has six driving modes). Higher-end Tiger 800s are now equipped with fully-adjustable WP suspension, while the lower range use fully-adjustable units from Showa. Other features include heated grips and seat and two-position adjustable seat. After the GST rollback, the base variant XR will retail at RM54,900 while the top-spec XCA will cost RM77,900 starting June 1(all prices are on-the-road, excluding insurance).

Triumph Tiger 800 Design

Triumph has retained the overall design and dimensions in the latest models, but there are several cosmetic changes. The mid and top-spec models now feature LED DRLs and five-step adjustable windscreen with aero deflectors for better aerodynamics. However, the base XR model still comes with a fixed position screen and normal bulb lights. More aesthetic updates can be noticed on the side panel which now features new badges in new colours. The XRT and XCA variants come with an illuminated backlit switchgear and five-way joystick control along with full-color TFT instrument display system, updated cruise control, hazard warning lights, heated grips & seat and fog lights.

Tiger 800 Ride & Handling

The Tiger 800 is built on a tubular steel trellis frame and is fitted with a dual stepped seat to aid the riding experience. Moreover, the handlebar on the latest models has been moved back by 10mm to provide better handling and control to the rider. Suspension setup on the XC range comprises of WP 43 mm upside down forks, with 220 mm travel attached to a 21-inch spoked wheel at the front and WP monoshock with 215 mm travel attached to a 17-inch spoked wheel at the rear. While the XR range gets Showa 43 mm upside down forks with 180 mm travel attached to a 19-inch alloy wheel at the front and Showa monoshock with 170 mm travel attached to a 17-inch alloy wheel at the rear.

Triumph Tiger 800 Engine & Fuel Consumption

Powering the latest Tiger 800s is the same 800 cc, liquid-cooled, 12-valve, DOHC, in-line three-cylinder engine that produces a max power of 95 PS at 9,500 rpm and peak torque of 79 Nm at 8,050 rpm, mated to a six-speed gearbox. However, there are significant changes inside the motor. The first gear ratio is now shorter and the updated engine feels more responsive and free-revving thanks to the revised crankshaft and counterbalancer. Even the clutch has been updated. Also, the exhaust is now more compact making the bike sound more bassier. The fuel tank capacity of the Tiger 800 is 19 litres.

Tiger 800 Braking & Safety

Braking on the Tiger 800 series is handled by twin 305 mm floating discs, Brembo 2-piston sliding calipers at the front and Single 255 mm disc, Nissin single piston sliding caliper at the rear. Only the base variant XR comes fitted with Nissin 2-piston sliding calipers at the front. To add to the safety, switchable ABS system and traction control are offered as standard to avoid skidding while accelerating on a slippery surface or loose gravel. An Off-Road Pro riding mode is available on the XCX and XCA that allows traction control to be switched off, with less invasive ABS for better control and safe driving.
