At nearly RM 10000 (after a reduction of RM 600 from the government’s zero rating of GST), the Yamaha NVX 155 is not for everyone. It is for the people who want a kapchai but do not want a boring commuter. They want all the advanced features and the best performance that they can get in a scooter. While it was launched in Malaysia in 2017, it was already being sold elsewhere under the name of Aeroxx. Malaysians had to wait an extra 9 months to get it here. But now it has spent a considerable amount of time here and gained a lot of popularity. In Malaysia, it competes against the Honda PCX, Yamaha’s own NMAX and as you will find out, many motorcycles in the same price range.

This is a good looking scooter. It is compact at 1990 mm (L) x 700 mm (W) x 1125 mm (H) and a wheelbase of 1350 mm. Essentially being an underbone, there is a spine in the front where the fuel tank resides. It is so high that you may want to get on the seat like a bike. The seat is high at 795 mm. Ground clearance is more than enough at 142 mm. The styling is sharp and aggressive. There are angular panels everywhere. The LED lights in the front give it an extremely angry stare. From a distance in the dark, you may think that it is one of Yamaha’s bigger bikes approaching you and not some scooter. The wheels are big 14” ones and wrapped in fat 110/80 53P tires in the front and 140/70 62P tires in the back. The grab bar at the rear is integrated in the body. The seat is fat and wide. The overall impression is one of a purpose-built beefy machine and not some dainty scooter. It is essentially an underbone but tries really hard to be a scooter. There are some sort of footboards on the front. Large 26mm wide forks in the front give confidence and comfort. A giant 5.8” LCD panel digital display serves as the instrument cluster. No analog dials here. It is bathed in Yamaha Blue and displays digits in white. It also has some funky animations and is interactive. The fuel filler cap, starter and the seat can all be unlocked from the same knob. It also comes with a remote starter. That fuel filler flap is on the spine and flips open with enthusiasm. The seat opens up to reveal a gigantic 25L storage space which can easily swallow a full face helmet. There is also a 12 V electrical outlet for charging devices which has its own protected space for storing said devices.

Ride & Handling

The compactness of the scooter extends to the rider too. Once you are on it, there is very little space on the floorboards to move about. However, the riding position is comfortable. The suspension is on the softer side. However, it still inspires confidence to take on corners at speed and also cruise on highways at constant 90 kmph speeds. The scooter is relatively lightweight at 118 kg and is easy to swerve around traffic.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

According to Yamaha, the NVX is able to deliver a mileage of 45 kmpl. It is indeed Yamaha’s first vehicle to be rated as an EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle). The engine shares the same platform as the NMAX. It is Yamaha Blue Core engine with variable valve actuation that provides the best of efficiency or power depending on the position of the throttle. Peak power is 14.8 hp at 8,000 rpm and peak torque is 14.4 Nm at 6,000 rpm. The engine stop-start feature can be disabled via a switch on the right side handle.

Braking & Safety

Unlike the NMAX, there is no disc brake in the rear. The drum brake however works brilliantly with the disc in the front. There is also an ABS system that comes as standard and provides confidence while braking on slippery surfaces.

This bike is a city riders joy and it has given me good, sturdy and hassle free ride from work to home almost every-day. Though it is categorised as a bike for the city, but it amazes me with its wonderful speed and the great braking system. I even tried the bike for a bit of high way driving and Read More

    Impressive Design

Yamaha scooters are no less than any other motorcycles. I am sure you will love the design of the scooter and its impressive and grippy tyres. Despite having 14-inch wheels (which is smaller than many mopeds), the NVX has 110-section front and 140-section rear tyres. The suspension is very good and it absorbs a lot tension through the bumps. But Read More
