Overview

Few bikes (or any vehicle for that matter) will ever reach the legendary status that the Honda Super Cub had reached during its existence. By providing cheap mobility to countless people, it has perhaps influenced the very shape of civilization for South East Asia. The social and cultural phenomena have been on Malaysian roads now for over 30 years. Its current iteration, EX5 Fi, was first launched here in 1987 and has sold over 2 million units in that time. Yet, even that number is dwarfed by the estimated 100 million units sold by Honda of the Super Cub, since 1958. In this time frame, the bike has seen many changes in the market. Today it battles against  Honda’s own Wave Alpha, homegrown Modenas Kriss MR1, and SYM Bonus 110 SR. There are two versions of this trusty underbone on sale today. The kickstart version with spoked wheels sells for RM 4,859. The alloy wheeled and kick plus electric starter version is priced at RM 5,404.

Design

It is amazing that the EX5 FI has remained relevant against today’s competition despite remaining unchanged from its half a century old design. The Honda, like the Porsche 911, has turned out to be a timeless design that is never going to lose its relevance. Even for hundreds of years into the future. Like the Porsche, the basic design has remained unchanged. The 30th anniversary in 2017 brought about some cosmetic changes to the styling. There are new graphics on the side panels and a chrome plated emblem on the front right underneath the headlight assembly. These small changes go well with the classy design and keep it mature and understated. The rest of the design is focused on practicality. The front apron is flat and small yet provides excellent wind protection. The headlight assembly is functional with large indicators integrated within the handlebars. The electric start version comes with black alloy wheels while the kickstart version comes with spoked wheels.

The overall dimension has remained the same since its 2015 update at 1923 mm (L) x 696 mm (W) x 1046 mm (H). The wheelbase at 1212 mm makes it easy to manoeuvre in busy traffic. The seat height is 745 mm which makes it excellent for short to average people. There are 17-inch wheels front and rear along with 70/90 and 80/90 tires at both ends. Honda has made the bike available in the family two-tone finish with three color options that include Euphoria Red Metallic, Vital Blue Metallic, and an almost black Mariana Purple Metallic. Other details include the analog but easy to read instrumentation and a chrome muffler.

Ride & Handling

The suspension setup is conventional albeit with a small surprise. The front gets 81 mm telescopic front forks while the rear gets dual 68 mm shock absorbers that are adjustable for preload. This allows for greater control over your comfort and ride, depending on whether you are touring alone or with a pillion. With a weight of under a 100 kg for both versions, manoeuvring this is a breeze on city roads. The ride is pliant with any kind of load and the seating position is relaxed.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Probably the most acclaimed detail about the EX5 next to the unmistakable design is the engine. This current iteration is powered by a 109.17 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, OHC engine producing 8.35 hp at 7,500 rpm and 8.4 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed constant mesh gearbox that uses a wet centrifugal clutch. The engine is Euro 3 compliant (from 2017) and is also fuel injected since its launch in 2015. It continues Honda’s legacy of reliable and indestructible engines while also upping the ante with incredible fuel economy. Boasting 58.3 kmpl, this is naturally certified as an energy efficient vehicle. With a 4.3-litre fuel tank, it can easily run for over 220 km before needing a trip to the petrol station. While it will run out of steam on high inclines and is not going to set any land speed records, that would be missing the point entirely. This is best suited for sorties around town with as much load as you can manage at unhurried speeds. But it will still keep up with you when you push it a little harder.

Braking & Safety

All versions come with drum brakes front and rear.

Verdict

The market is unrecognizable from what it was 30 years ago. And yet it is safe to say that the Honda EX5 Fi is going to outlast the competition if not the human race itself. Its solid design, bulletproof engine and affordable price give it a legacy that you can bank on.

My only dreams motorcycle in 90s

It was my dreams to have an affordable motorcycle at that time. When I came across the motorcycle shop, I saw a red 'kapchai" being displayed at that shop. Then, I came to realise... what if I have this machine on my own even though I never had B2 license but only a full B from the beginning I started Read More

    SIMPLICITY AT ITS BEST

A clear and crisp design is what makes this bike stand out. Since I have never been a fan of complex structures and technologies, this bike with its simple structure and practical usage makes for a great choice. Affordability of price is an important feature which makes up for the old looks for which this bike has been often criticized. Read More
