While there is a new Honda Wave breaking the scene in many markets, no such luck for us Malaysians. We still have to do with the old version with its ugly front turning indicators. The Wave Alpha did get a minor update last year when it came with its one make the race (2017 Honda Wave Alpha Challenge) inspired livery. But the current Wave could use a more severe update than just a few new paint schemes. The Wave Alpha has been the market leader in the small capacity kapchai market for a long time. It is natural for Honda to feel that there is no need to change this winning formula. Currently, the Wave faces off against the Suzuki Smash V115. It is available in 2 variants. The base comes with spoked wheels and drum brakes. The sportier version comes with alloy wheels and a disc brake. The racing livery comes only for the one with the disc brakes. While the base is priced at just over RM 4500 the sports edition costs about RM 500 more.

The easily recognizable silhouette of this underbone has remained mostly unchanged for a long time now. Despite this, it is still very modern. This is somewhat thanks to the MMC it received last year. MMC stands for Minor Model Change (yes we are not kidding). These minor changes include a whole host of new colors that use the pearl effect to glow like butterflies in the sunlight. The graphics are new too and the new stripes make it look much sportier. Also included are the new ergonomic grab rail on the rear and the new sporty exhaust. Buying the racing livery also seems like a good idea simply because of the way it stands out from the crowd. Things like the dimensions of the bike at 1937mm (L) x 703mm (W) x 1086mm (H) have remained the same. The same instrument panel with its gear indicator does duty on top of the headlight cluster. The headlight cluster still has the same ugly setup for the indicators. The 5-spoke black alloy, however,r look really beefy with the blackened engine components. The seat is narrow but comfortable. The front apron does a good job of protecting the rider’s legs from the wind. Under the sea,t there is also a very useful underseat storage area that can be used to store things like rain protection.

Ride & Handling

The Wave Alpha is best suited for city roads and short commutes. The conventional suspension setup using telescopic front forks and twin shock absorbers in the rear allow for comfortable rides over bad roads.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The engine remains unchanged too. The reason behind the success of the Wave Alpha since its launch in 2015 has been its engine. It is not only extremely reliable and refined, but it is also one of the most fuel-efficient engines in the market. The new Wave is now Euro 3 compliant (thanks to its new exhaust) while also having the rating of an EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle). The underbone’s light weight of just 98 kg also helps in achieving these distinctions. The Wave Alpha uses an air-cooled and carbureted 4-Stroke SOHC 109.17 cc single cylinder engine that makes 6.14 kW at 7,500 rpm and 8.59 Nm of peak torque at 5500 rpm. These figures are enough to propel this bike to a top speed of 100-105 kmph while also posting fuel consumption figures above 55 kmpl. Using a 4-speed transmission, the Wave delivers smooth power delivery in any condition. The only fly in the ointment is the tiny 3.7-litre fuel tank. While it does not take a lot of money to get it filled, it is simply too bothersome to have it filed every few days.

Braking & Safety

While the base version only gets drum brakes on both wheels, the higher end variant gets a disc brake on the front. At this price range, expecting anything more would be preposterous.

However, for the price, you do get a very well made, reliable, and a frugal bike that not just looks good but performs well too. This is definitely one of the best bikes you can buy in the country today.

    A dash of joy

This peppy little cub is just what I was looking for to go around for short distances. As with most Honda bikes, the engine is very refined and it is a very easy bike to ride.
