Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) System Deployed at National Border
KUALA LUMPUR: Previously, an Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system was employed by The Royal Malaysian Police( PDRM) which was used to identify vehicles with foreign registration plates with unsettled processes. Now, at Malaysian border, said system is installed at nine locations and by August, it is expected to be operational, understands Bernama.
“At least, 20 units of ANPR worth RM30 million will be used to track down traffic offenders in the first phase. We are in the process of buying the scanner,” said Bukit Aman Traffic Police staff officer, Supt. Zulkifli Yahya. “ANPR, using technology from USA, will be widely used in states bordering neighboring countries, including to track down foreign nationals with outstanding traffic summonses,” he stated.
Police officers are allowed to act immediately on traffic delinquent by scanners which is installed in patrol vehicles. In addition, police officers will also be aided in tracking down vehicles involved in stolen units as well as other criminal activities.
In Johor Bahru, an ANPR operation resulted out of 4,200 outstanding speeding instructions collected from Singaporean motorists- for speed-related faults, there was a sizeable chunk, according to the report. To foreign vehicles, more than 700,000 traffic faults have been issued since 2010, with Singaporean units building up 500,000 of total figure.
