Toyota Malaysia is one of the country’s oldest and longest-running automotive manufacturers. Today, Toyota maintains over 80 dealerships across Malaysia, including sales, service, body & paint, and GR Garage. The UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. (UMET) is the official distributor, assembler, and exporter of Toyota vehicles locally.
UMW Toyota operations began in October, it was formerly known as Sejati Motor. It is a 51:39:10 joint venture between United Motor Works, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Toyota Tsusho Corporation. Assembly Services Sdn. Bhd. (ASSB) is wholly owned by UMWT and is the exclusive assembler of Toyota passenger and commercial vehicles in the country. It is to be noted that UMWT is also the official distributor of Toyota premium arm, Lexus, in Malaysia since 2006.
Fast forward to today, UMW Toyota prides itself as one of the country’s most competitive automotive manufacturers with a 47% market share in 2016. It is amongst the top 5 distributors in the world; also Toyota forklift has a 50% share in Malaysia.
The long-standing Japanese brand in Malaysia has several best-sellers in key segments, these include the Vios, the Hilux, the Innova MPV, Camry, Corolla Altis, and the Fortuner SUV.
In February 2020, UMW Toyota opened its order books for the 2020 Alphard and Vellfirea. Both revised with upgraded features in two areas safety and connectivity. The 12th-generation was also launched in Malaysia in October 2019. It is one of the first models to adopt TNGA platform that offers enormous flexibility to engineers and designers. Locally it is offered in two variants - 1.8G and 1.8E.
The year 2019 is a special one for UMW Toyota as it marks the arrival of the iconic GR Supra. In Malaysia, it is offered in a single GTS variant and is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cyl turbo engine producing 340 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque. Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a new quick-shifting, sport-tuned eight-speed electronic automatic transmission. The car can do a 0-100 kmph sprint in just 4.3 seconds.
UMW Toyota also upgraded several features in the Toyota Hilux range and even added a new variant. The Fortuner and Innova also benefited from several enhancements.
Toyota has always evolved as per the changing times and customer tastes. Be it introducing new models and giving a facelift to an old-running car, the brand has kept its lineup top-notch.

Toyota changed the MPV game with the Innova. No wonder it’s the most useful and sought-after MPV in various markets across the world. Earlier, MPVs were mostly people carriers with no focus on safety and comfort. Innova was the first MPV to give importance to passenger comfort, driver aids, and safety. The Innova is a big car with lots of 7
Yes, it’s an SUV but doesn’t expect any outstanding performance from the Toyota Corolla-Cross. Toyota could have given any other name to the car but it probably wanted to cash in on Corolla’s popularity. Since it’s an SUV, the design should have been server. But the Toyota Corolla-Cross performs and handles well. It has a pretty short turning radius. The 21
Crossovers look very stylish these days. They have come a long way since their typical egg-type design. The Toyota Harrier has handsome looks for a crossover. The driving dynamics is class-leading. I have driven other crossovers but the Harrier is the best of the lot. It’s very well-mannered in terms of handling. Turning corners is easy. The transmission is smooth 11
MPVs are looking more like SUVs these days. The Rush is a very stylish MPV that has an SUV-type look. This is a fully homegrown car and is more affordable than the foreign brands. I have been driving the Rush since 2020 and my ownership experience has been very good. The car comes with a decently powerful 1.5-liter petrol engine 4
I was looking for a mid-sized SUV and after a lot of market surveys, decided to buy the Toyota Fortuner. Before that, I took a test drive and was impressed with the car’s handling and performance. The Fortuner is a rather big and burly SUV with a tremendous road presence. The engine is superbly powerful and the vehicle shows its 16
