Subaru Crosstrek crossover SUV arrives in Malaysia

Imported EVs could become more expensive in Malaysia from July 1
MITI has issued a new regulation for fully imported (CBU) EVs in Malaysia, which could impact the Malaysian EV market significantly. From July 1, 2026, fully imported EVs must have a minimum CIF value of RM 200,000 and a minimum motor output of 180 kW (or 245 PS) to qualify for import. CIF refers to cost, insurance and freight, which is the declared import value before local costs, margins, registration and other charges are added. This regulation can create pressure on foreign brands to consider local assembly if they want to remain competitive in Malaysia.
