The previous generations of Toyota Hilux have built up a huge stature for themselves when it comes to unshakable reliability, with tough build quality all over it. Thankfully, that very trait has been passed to this very version of the Toyota Hilux as well, with the current generation model possessing even tougher in feel body panels.
Compared to the previous generations of the Toyota Hilux which were blamed for not being modern and impressive in their looks in and out, the current generation model manages to solve that problem to a huge extent. The Hilux looks quite butch on the outside, and at the same time, the interior cabin layout shared with that of the Fortuner SUV give the Hilux some premium feel on the inside as well.
The 2.8-litre diesel engine in the Toyota Hilux feels powerful enough to make the pickup truck pass any grueling task with flying colors. However, when it comes to engine refinement, it definitely needs some massive improvement, as the engine sounds quite noisy even on the idle.
Another weak trait of the Toyota Hilux, as with most of the pickup trucks in the world, is the ride quality on smoother surfaces. While the Hilux’s four-wheel drivetrain makes it feel happy at home during off-roading, the same suspension and drive setup feels bouncy while driving on plush highways.

Mostly, pickups do not gain much fame as much as commercial vehicles do, but when we talk about Toyota Hilux, there is a different kind of likeability. The eighth-generation of the pickup was officially introduced back in 2015 in Thailand, Bangkok, and Australia. The car was later facelifted in 2017 at the Thailand International Motor Expo. Now a new variant Toyota Hilux 2.8 Black Edition has become the talk of the town, especially on Malaysian roads. The Hilux badge came into existence about half a century ago and since the pickup was on a ride of huge fame and credibility. The Toyota Hilux soon became the most desirable pickup with its durability and powerful performance along with the perfect practicality to ride on all kinds of terrains. Earlier, pickups were only used and thought to be used for carrying agricultural loads or heavy goods. But with time, the understanding was developed and pickups were also used as rough terrain journey partners.
Toyota Hilux is strong competition for Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton.
As robust as it looks from the outside, the Toyota Hilux is all appealing from the inside as well. As you get inside the Hilux, you will be surprised to see such styling elements that could even leave a luxury car behind. The rich leather seat upholstery and aperture, give a plush feel to the cabin space and also add comfort to the occupants. The all-black color contouring on the dashboard looks very premium and adds to the style quotient of the interior. Selected variants of the Toyota Hilux also have an Optitron Instrument Cluster with a digital climate control system. The center instrument cluster has a 4.2-inch Thin-Film-Transistor (TFT) screen with two dials on either side.
The Toyota Hilux also gets a chilled upper glove box so that you can enjoy cold drinks while driving. The cabin of the 2018 Toyota Hilux is designed very practically and gets various utility features like cubby holes to store various small items. If more storage space is needed, the rear seats can be lifted up to store items underneath. The analogue clocks on the center console have a shade of white and black to make it look sportier. The pickup has a Smart Entry & Start System which enables the driver to enter the car smartly and turn on the ignition without touching the key.
The dashboard is articulated keeping in mind the driver’s comfort. There are a lot of switch gears, planted just under the display screen. The cabin is very well insulated on the inside and on the hood making it noise-proof.
As much we liked writing about its interior, the exterior styling hues are equally attractive and desirable. Every corner of the exterior aesthetics oozes out style and deluxe quotient. The body also looks robust and powerful from the outside. Talking about the front fascia first, it proudly houses a sharp chrome embellished grille which is extended on the LED projector headlamps. The front bumper is hexagonal in shape which gives an elevated look to the lower bumper, upgrading the styling game altogether from the front. Other items covered in shiny black armour are the side mirror covers and door handles, and the replacement of chrome surfaces continue with the front bumper and also with the front grille. The huge and bulky Toyota Hilux rides on 18-inch wheels, which are intricately articulated to take the pickup on all kinds of terrains, be it a smooth city ride or rough terrains. Even the alloy wheels are a prominent feature of attraction, with its dual-tone garnishing and machine-finished cutting.
The rear fascia of the car is also equally stylish as the front fascia. The cargo space is pretty long making the vehicle look lengthier. The taillights are very neatly placed at the rear and also compliments the robust profile of the vehicle. Fog lamps are also in place to save you from foggy and dusky nights. The wing mirrors are electronically adjustable and retractable along with smart ergonomic design. Also, the rear step is an intelligent inclusion, making the mounting and unmounting easier.
The Toyota Hilux has a powerful machine at its heart which is responsible for its rugged performance. The engine is a High-Pressure Common Rail technology which improves the power and also the fuel efficiency significantly. It is a 2.4-liter engine that can spark maximum power of 150 PS at 3,400 rpm and a peak torque of 400 Nm which comes between 1,600 and 2,000 rpm. The other variant with a bigger 2.8-litre engine is extremely powerful, making a huge 177 PS power, sparking at the same 3,400 rpm, and a peak torque of 450 Nm coming between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. The wheels get all the power through a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The pickup has three drive modes, the first one being the Eco Mode which optimises the AC cooling system and the throttle response to tackle the fuel efficiency. Moreover, the car comes in an AWD mechanism only. However, the drivers have the option of switching between 2WD and 4WD.
You need not worry whether the robust and powerful Toyota Hilux is safe to take on rough terrains. The Hilux was rated with 5-stars in the prestigious ASEAN NCAP crash test for AOP (Adult Occupants Protection).
The cabin has seven safety airbags in the automatic transmission trims and the manual trims get three airbags. The Toyota pickup can be a hardcore offroader, hence, it has hill-start assist control making sure that it does not roll back when you are trying to initiate a hill ride. Plus, the addition of ABS, along with electronic brake-force distribution, are added safety features. The ESS (emergency stop signal), looks after the cars behind are signaled with a continuous flashing of light.
The Hilux is really massive in dimensions and is powerful and robust in terms of functional design and performance. It is also one of the best pickups for loading purposes and off-roading trips. Even the cabin is so elegantly designed and is super comfortable for the driver. The best part is that you get all this luxury without compromising the power. The Hilux is truly a premium and powerful beast to add to your collection.
I was looking for a robust pickup truck that I can use for my performing heavy-duty tasks. I am very impressed with the build quality on offer and it feels like it is built like a tank. The load-carrying capacity of this vehicle is very impressive. The performance of the engine is excellent as it offers a very punchy performance.
For its ruggedness and tough appeal alone, the Toyota Hilux has the ability to make a strong impression on me as a macho and go anywhere vehicle for whom I can vouch for in any kind of circumstance. The Hilux has got that certain toughness and strength which I was looking for as a practical off road vehicle. And it
If you are planning to buy a pickup car you get concerned about the finish and reliability factor at the outset. This car will look after both the aspects in the most skilled way. Nothing to complain about. In fact, you will be surprised to know that the latest edition of this car is quite family friendly as well. You
The Hilux is the most common pickup truck in Malaysia. My 2016 model has a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The Hilux is really massive in dimensions and it takes quite an effort to climb into its cabin. The turning radius is also large because of a rather sluggish steering response. I’m not sure whether this has been rectified in the
I always imagined a pickup truck with a rugged design and a simple cabin that is devoid of any fancy features. However, my thinking was challenged by the Toyota Hilux. When I first saw this truck, I was absolutely stunned by the stylish and premium looks of it. From every angle, the Hilux felt like it was meant to be
I have been in search for a pickup truck mainly for my business house. After talking to some I felt I should go for the latest upgraded version of Toyota Helix. Now if you are wondering what the main reason for taking this decision was, then I should mention that this car looks way sleek and modern if compared to
The Hilux needs no introduction. It has gained the reputation of being the most reliable truck and after my experience, it definitely is. The Hilux will not disappoint, just give it a try! And the new generation has all the latest tech too, so you don't really feel like you are missing something.
The Hilux is one of the best trucks around, and for good reason. Gone are the days when trucks were only for work. These new generation trucks can be used both for work and family. I find the Hilux more practical than any SUV (unless you want 7 seats). My Hilux has simply been bulletproof and all the creature comforts
I have always believed in living at the edge, undertaking adventurous and doing frequent off-roading trips is my kind of thing. So when I bought the Toyota Hilux it didn’t come as a surprise to my friends and family. This car has been my best companion and a bold style statement. I love taking small treks and camping on mountain,
Now while we think of purchasing a car we mostly go by looks of it and then think on the other aspect. I have also done something likewise earlier and had to suffer a lot for that. This time I was sure I won’t go by looks alone. I was in search for a car that is sturdy and strong
