Two variants are available. The Toyota Yaris Cross 1.5S petrol is priced at RM99,000, while the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid is priced at RM109,900. Both are locally assembled at UMW Toyota Motor’s plant in Bukit Raja, Selangor.

The arrival of the Yaris Cross also expands Toyota’s hybrid line-up in Malaysia, joining the Corolla Cross Hybrid and the recently introduced Vios HEV.

UMW Toyota Motor also sells imported hybrid models such as the Vellfire, Harrier, Camry and Innova Zenix, but the Yaris Cross is clearly aimed at a more accessible part of the market.
More importantly, this gives Toyota a proper compact SUV to fight in one of Malaysia’s busiest segments. At this price point, the Yaris Cross goes up against everything from the Honda WR-V, Chery Tiggo Cross and Perodua Ativa to larger B-segment and entry C-segment SUVs like the Proton X50 and Mitsubishi X-Force, depending on how buyers look at size, practicality and brand value.

The petrol model uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT. This is the 2NR-VE engine, similar to the one used in the Toyota Veloz, producing 106 PS and 138 Nm.
The hybrid uses Toyota’s fourth-generation hybrid system, combining a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. The engine makes 91 PS and 121 Nm, while the electric motor contributes 80 PS and 141 Nm. Combined system output is rated at 111 PS.
Toyota claims fuel consumption for the Yaris Cross Hybrid ranges from 27.8 km/l to 33.3 km/l based on internal factory testing. Because there's so many types of hybrids these days, it's worth to note that ss with Toyota’s other hybrid models, this is a self-charging system, so owners do not need to plug it in or depend on public charging stations.
That is the key selling point for the conventional hybrid system. It gives drivers some of the smoothness and low-speed electric driving feel of an EV, but without changing their daily routine. No charging app, no wallbox, no range anxiety.

Boot space is one of its stronger numbers. The Yaris Cross offers up to 471 litres of luggage capacity, with a 200 mm-deep underfloor compartment and a temporary 16-inch spare tyre. For context, its bigger brother, the Toyota Corolla Cross, has a 440 litres of boot sapce. With the rear seats folded, Toyota says the cargo length stretches up to 955 mm.
A powered tailgate is standard, and it comes with a kick sensor. There is also a close-and-lock function, allowing the driver to close the tailgate and lock the vehicle in one step.
210 mm ground clearance and 600 mm water wading
The Yaris Cross is front-wheel drive, but Toyota is clearly leaning into the SUV image here. Ground clearance is rated at 210 mm, while water wading capability is listed at up to 600 mm.
That does not make it an off-roader, but for Malaysian road conditions, flash floods, steep ramps and broken urban roads, those numbers are useful. The Yaris Cross also has a tight 5.2-metre turning radius, which should make it easy to manoeuvre in tight parking lots and narrow city roads.

Suspension is handled by MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. Braking hardware consists of ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear.
Exterior design and colours
The Yaris Cross has a more upright and rugged look compared with the regular Yaris hatchback. The front gets a trapezoid-themed design with dual trapezoid grilles, while the side profile uses sharper character lines, flared fenders and 18-inch machined alloy wheels with 215/55R18 tyres.
At the rear, the tail lamps stretch out towards the edges of the body to give the SUV a wider stance. LED daytime running lights are included, along with slim headlamps that integrate the turn signals and high/low beam functions.

Interior gets 10.1-inch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Inside, the Yaris Cross gets a blue-black cabin theme, with blue accents on the dashboard and seat stitching. Toyota says blue has traditionally been used to identify its electrified models, so the theme is especially fitting for the hybrid variant.
The HEV variant gets synthetic leather upholstery with a breathable mesh pattern on the seatback. Other cabin highlights include a genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel, soft-touch surfaces on key contact points, satin-plated trim, full LED interior lighting and four-level adjustable ambient illumination.
The driver gets an 8-way powered seat, while the meter cluster is a 7-inch digital TFT display with four customisable layouts. On the hybrid, the usual tachometer is replaced by an energy usage display to show whether the vehicle is operating in economy or power mode.
Infotainment is handled by a 10.1-inch centre display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also a wireless phone charging pad in the centre console, plus dual USB Type-C ports for rear passengers.

Toyota Safety Sense included
Safety kit is good for the Yaris Cross. The SUV comes with Toyota Safety Sense, using a stereoscopic camera to monitor the road ahead.
The system includes:
Toyota Safety Sense feature
Pre-Collision System
Pre-Collision Braking
Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control
Lane Departure Warning
Lane Departure Prevention
Lane Keeping Control
Front Departure Alert
Pedal Misoperation Control
Automatic High Beam
On top of that, the Yaris Cross also gets Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Panoramic View Monitor and Clearance Sonar.
Standard passive safety includes six airbags, ABS, EBD, three-point seatbelts for all five occupants and ISOFIX child seat mounting points.
Hybrid battery warranty up to 10 years
The Toyota Yaris Cross comes with a 5-year vehicle warranty with unlimited mileage.
For the Yaris Cross Hybrid, the hybrid battery is covered for 8 years with unlimited mileage. Importantly, Toyota’s hybrid warranty also covers the inverter and power management control ECU for the same duration.
Owners can also extend the hybrid battery and related component warranty by another two years, bringing total coverage up to 10 years. The extended warranty is transferable, which should help long-term ownership and resale value.
The hybrid battery itself is a lithium-ion unit with 48 cells and a total output of 763.7 Wh. It weighs 20.7 kg, is assembled locally, and uses cabin air cooling to manage operating temperature.
At RM99,000, the Toyota Yaris Cross 1.5S gives buyers the SUV body, Toyota badge, high ground clearance, big boot and useful safety equipment without crossing the RM100k psychological line.
But the more interesting variant is the RM109,900 Yaris Cross Hybrid in our opinion. For roughly RM10,900 more, it adds Toyota’s hybrid system, much better claimed fuel economy, smoother low-speed driving and the long-term confidence of Toyota’s hybrid warranty.
In a market where many buyers still want lower fuel bills but are not ready to live with a full EV, the Yaris Cross Hybrid makes a lot of sense.
It is not Toyota trying to scare people into electrification. It is Toyota offering a familiar SUV with a fuel-saving hybrid system that does not ask the owner to change much.
