Jetour T1 variant comparison: 1.5L vs 2.0L - Which should you buy?

Jetour recently expanded its lineup in Malaysia with the launch of a boxy lifestyle SUV, the T1. Unlike its elder sibling, the T2, the T1 is not a hardcore off-roader. Instead, it is designed for everyday comfort while retaining a rugged SUV appeal.

The Jetour T1 is a versatile model that offers urban comfort and moderate off-road capability, catering to the growing demand for multifunctional SUVs This lite off-road SUV is offered in two locally assembled variants - 1.5L TGDi 2WD and 2.0L TGDi XWD.

As we can see in the above table, the 1.5L TGDi 2WD variant is priced at RM 129,800 while the 2.0L TGDi XWD costs RM 146,800, making the latter almost RM 17,000 dearer than the former. So, what extra set of features does this higher-priced variant bring to the table? Let’s find out.

In terms of size, both variants of the new Jetour SUV are identical, measuring 4705 mm in length, 1,967 mm in width, and 1,840 mm in height, which translates into a strong road presence and generous cabin space. However, when it comes to kerb weight, we can notice a significant difference. The higher-spec model is 179 kg heavier than the base-spec, which is mainly due to the different mechanical setups.

What actually sets the two Jetour T1 variants apart is the drivetrain setup. The entry-level trim is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol FWD engine producing 170 PS and 270 Nm, while the range-topping version runs on a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol AWD unit tuned to deliver 245 PS and 375 Nm.

As for drive modes, there are only three in the 1.5L trim, whereas the 2.0L trim is equipped with seven modes along with  X-Smart and Crawl modes. The X-Smart automatically adjusts the vehicle’s settings based on the terrain, while the Crawl helps maintain a low, steady speed during off-road driving. However, the extra performance and capabilities come at the expense of fuel efficiency.

Overall, the T1 2.0L is for those who want performance and genuine all-weather ability, while the T1 1.5L is aimed at buyers seeking a comfortable and efficient everyday SUV.

When it comes to features, both variants of the Jetour T1 are generously equipped, offering a premium and comfortable driving experience. 

But the RM 17k premium for the 2.0L model is not just for the bigger engine and all-wheel drive capability; it also brings a more comprehensive feature set. It includes bigger 19-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, welcome lamp, bigger 15.6-inch central touchscreen unit, Sony sound system, multi-colour ambient lighting and front parking sensors. 

Which Jetour T1 variant should you buy?

Well, the answer boils down to your preferences and budget. You can choose the 1.5L variant if you want a rugged-looking SUV that offers excellent value for everyday driving. However, if you are seeking stronger performance, off-road capabilities (moderate), and a more comprehensive feature kit, go for the 2.0L variant.
