JAECOO J6 Review 2024
Abhishek Katariya says
The Jaecoo J6 is the first all-electric SUV from Jaecoo, a subsidiary brand of Chery Automobiles from China. This all-electric compact SUV is essentially a rebadged version of the iCar 03 sold by Chery in China. The Malaysian market has the Jaecoo J6 in a single variant, which comes standard with an all-wheel drive configuration with a dual-motor setup and colour options like white, silver, and black.
JAECOO J6 Interior & Features
The Malaysia-spec Jaecoo J6 has dual-tone white and black artificial leather upholstery with contrast piano black and silver inserts. The dashboard's layers look clean and sharp, and tech-laden features like a 10.25-inch full-TFT instrument console and a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system make it look extremely new-age.
While the three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel has a funky design with flat upper and lower edges, the centre console has slim AC vents for the dual-zone automatic climate control below the infotainment system. The centre console between the front seats looks unique with a crystal drive mode selector placed on it. The cabin also gets feel-good features like a wireless charger, heated steering wheel and front seats, powered and ventilated driver’s seat, 64-colour ambient lighting, 12-speaker audio system, and more.
J6 Exterior
While the Jaecoo J6's overall design is heavily inspired by the Land Rover Defender, some unique-looking design elements present all around give the J6 a distinctive identity of its own. The overall design has a squared and upright stance like a traditional body-on-frame SUV, which adds to its appeal.
The front profile of the Jaecoo J6 has angular and longitudinally placed, L-shaped i-themed all-LED headlamps with triangular inserts, which, along with the closed black grille in the middle, make the front look chic and modern. The J6 replaces the illuminated i of the iCar 03 with bold ‘Jaecoo’ lettering in the middle.
The Jaecoo J6's side profile is very Defender-like, with an angular and upright design for the windows, blacked-out pillars, and door panels. It also has trapezoidal flared wheel arches with body cladding over them. The Malaysian car market gets the Jaecoo J6 with 19-inch machined alloy wheels as standard, which further elevates the SUV's stance.
At the back, the upright and almost vertical design of the Jaecoo J6 has a windscreen with a roof spoiler and integrated LED brake light in the upper half, a plain boot lid with i-themed vertical LED tail lamps on the sides, and protruding rectangular panel with Jaecoo lettering in the middle. This tailgate has a side-opening design with an electric suction function.
JAECOO J6 Ride & Handling
The presence of 19-inch alloy wheels and a slightly sport-tuned suspension setup comprising independent Macpherson struts at the front and multi-link at the rear make the driving experience of the Jaecoo J6 a bit dynamic. The compact electric SUV also comes with multiple drive modes like Eco, Comfort, Sport, Custom, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Gravel, all of which perform excellently. However, the steering feels artificial at higher speeds with a lack of feedback, making it feel uninspiring to drive.
J6 Engine & Fuel Consumption
In Malaysia, the Jaecoo J6 is available with a dual-motor setup as standard, with one each at the front and rear giving it an all-wheel drive configuration. Paired with a single-speed transmission, this dual-motor setup claims 279 bhp of maximum power and 385 Nm of maximum torque. The 69.8kWh LFP battery pack offered as standard in the J6 claims a CLTC-certified 501 km range.
JAECOO J6 Braking & Safety
Along with must-have features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, electronic stability control, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill starts assist and hill descent control, the Jaecoo J6 also has multiple L2+ driving assistance features like forward collision warning, lane change assist, automated parking, 540-degree recording camera, adaptive cruise control and more.
J6 Verdict
With a unique design language, funky and premium cabin, long list of equipment and potent all-wheel drive powertrain, the Jaecoo J6 makes up for a very effective and appealing electric SUV for first-time EV buyers.
