Perodua EM-O Review 2024
Abhishek Katariya says
The Perodua EM-O (Electric Motion Online) is an electric vehicle concept from Malaysian car maker Perodua. It is expected to evolve into the carmaker’s first all-electric offering. Touted to be a teaser of the electric version of the Myvi hatchback planned for the future, the Perodua EMO was introduced to the world at the Malaysia Auto Show in May 2023.
Perodua EM-O Interior & Features
Perodua did release an image of the interior layout of the EM-O concept car, which looks highly attractive, purposeful and sporty at the same time. Inspired by the cockpits of fighter jets, the cabin of the Perodua EM-O concept has a defined cockpit space for the driver, which is clearly distinguished from the co-driver side.
Between the front seats of the Perodua EM-O concept, a colour-coded separating element flows in a wraparound fashion towards the driver’s side door panel. The three-spoke steering wheel has silver-themed inserts on the spokes and flat upper and lower edges. The EM-O concept also has a rectangular full-TFT instrument console and a slanted touchpad over the separating panel in the middle of the front seats, through which one can control audio and climate settings.
EM-O Exterior
The Perodua EM-O is a preview of what the company's first all-electric car will look like. Based on its design, it is safe to say that it will be a great-looking car in reality. This sharp-looking electric hatchback concept car has angular design elements all around, which make it an attention magnet.
The five-door Perodua EM-O electric concept has the size and stance of the Myvi hatchback, with the conventional silhouette backed by interesting design elements. At the front, the slightly curved bonnet flows towards the minimalist front profile with triangular headlamps on the sides. These headlamps have daytime running LEDs on the upper edges and have all-LED treatment for the main illumination.
The front bumper of the Perodua EM-O has small horizontal inserts spread across its central part, with the corners having triangular air curtains with gloss black highlights on the side edges. The EM-O concept has short overhangs at the front, with a smooth-looking design for the door panels. Given that it is a concept car, the rearview mirrors and door handles are absent, with cameras mounted in place of rearview mirrors.
The Perodua EM-O's rear profile is equally attractive. The electric hatchback concept has a sharply raked rear windscreen, roof spoiler, large LED triangular tail lamps, and an LED connecting light bar between them. The rear bumper also has large L-shaped inserts on the corners.
Perodua EM-O Ride & Handling
Since the Perodua EM-O is a concept car, we cannot explain how it drives. Perodua hasn’t revealed the suspension specifications of the EM-O but has revealed that it measures 3,895mm long, 1,735mm wide, and 1,515mm tall while having a wheelbase of 2,500mm. These dimensions make the Perodua EM-O measure as large as the Perodua Myvi hatchback.
EM-O Engine & Fuel Consumption
Perodua has given the EM-O electric concept car a front-wheel-drive configuration. The front-mounted electric motor produces a maximum power output of 95 PS and a peak torque output of 121 Nm. The transmission is a single-speed automatic gearbox, which propels this car to the 100 kmph mark from a standstill in 10 seconds.
Perodua claims that the EM-O has a top speed of 160 kmph. The Perodua EM-O also gets a 50kWh battery pack, which can deliver a maximum driving range of 300-350 km. Compatible with charging up to 300kW DC supply, this battery can be juiced up to 80% SoC in just 20 minutes.
Perodua EM-O Braking & Safety
Given that it is a concept vehicle, the Perodua EM-O's safety features have not yet been revealed. However, the production version of this car will likely have basic safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, electronic stability control, hill start assist, and a rear camera.
EM-O Verdict
The Perodua EM-O is far from reality for now. However, given the promising specifications of its battery and motor and the edgy design language, once it becomes a reality, it is expected to shake up the entry-level electric vehicle category.
