Toyota Yaris Cross: Top 5 things to know

Completely different car from the European version

The Yaris Cross made its ASEAN debut in the Indonesian market back in 2023 and is unrelated to the SUV with the same name (introduced in 2020) offered in other global markets, including Japan, Europe, and Australia.

Developed from scratch for the region, the ASEAN-spec model is built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) with a strong focus on durability, practicality, and cost efficiency. The Euro-spec version, on the other hand, underpins the automaker’s more advanced TNGA-B platform, which prioritises driving dynamics and refinement.

These SUVs are also different in terms of design; the ASEAN model features a more traditional SUV stance, while the European model looks like a raised hatchback crossover. When it comes to size, the former is overall larger, offering more cabin space, improved rear seat comfort, and enhanced road presence, catering to the needs of Southeast Asian buyers.

Identical twin to the Perodua Traz

Just like the Toyota Veloz and Perodua Alza, the upcoming Toyota Yaris is the twin of the Perodua Traz that went on sale in Malaysia late last year. Both measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width and have the same wheelbase of 2,525 mm. In terms of height, the Yaris Cross is 40 mm shorter than the 1,655 mm tall Perodua SUV.

Both models are underpinned by the DNGA platform, which means sharing the same basic structural framework, core engineering philosophy and underlying components. The said architecture has a rigid unibody construction and is paired with MacPherson front struts and a rear torsion beam, promising a more comfortable and competent ride to the occupants.

Offered in petrol and Hybrid drivetrain options

The Toyota Yaris Cross is offered in two drivetrain options in the Indonesian market -

    • A 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine, which churns out 106 PS of maximum power and 138 Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via D-CVT (Dual-Mode CVT) or a 5-speed manual transmission.
    • A hybrid powertrain, which comprises a 1.5-litre NA four-cylinder generating 91 PS and 121 Nm and an electric motor that produces 80 PS and 141 Nm. The combined system output is rated at 111 PS. Also part of the setup is a lithium-ion battery and CVT gearbox.

As for the local market, UMW Toyota is expected to bring the hybrid version of the SUV, considering the brand’s recent push towards electrification.

Modern SUV design and feature-rich appeal

Based on a ‘Solid & Dynamic’ design approach, the Toyota Yaris Cross features a modern SUV design with a large trapezoidal-shaped front grille, aggressive LED headlamps, boxy wheel arches, body cladding, and a two-piece tail light design.

The cabin of the upcoming Toyota SUV focuses on practicality with a tech-forward layout. As for the features, the Indonesia-spec model comes equipped with a wide range of advanced bits, including -

    • 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system
    • 7-inch digital instrument panel
    • Wireless charging pad
    • Wireless smartphone connectivity
