UMW Toyota brings Corolla Concept, IMV Origin and Kids mobi to KLIMS 2026 in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota Malaysia's KLIMS 2026 lineup leans heavily into "what's next" rather than "what's for sale."

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the Toyota IMV Origin?

A stripped-down, modular flatbed concept that ships from the factory unfinished so local communities can complete the build themselves. It runs on Toyota's IMV platform and was originally aimed at rural Africa, not Malaysia.
  • Will Toyota Kids mobi actually go on sale?

No pricing, specs, or production date have been confirmed. It remains a concept built to explore autonomous mobility for children.
  • UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is running its showcase at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2026 from 12 to 21 June at MITEC, and the headline acts are three concept vehicles with no confirmed production plan at all.

That's not really a knock on the booth. Concept cars are built to set direction, not move metal, and Toyota's pavilion (a Japanese heritage theme reworked into a modern mobility setting) is clearly there to get people talking rather than signing booking forms.

Still, it's worth separating the show floor spectacle from what Malaysian buyers can actually walk into a Toyota showroom and drive home this month.

The three concepts on the stand

The Corolla Concept carries the most weight simply because Corolla is still the best-selling nameplate in the world. First shown at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo back in October 2025, it previews a sportier, lower-slung design direction for Toyota's next-generation small car, built around a platform that can take EV, plug-in hybrid, conventional hybrid or petrol power depending on the market.

Toyota hasn't said when or if this look reaches production, so for now it's a styling exercise rather than a preview of the Corolla Cross Hybrid or Corolla Cross GR Sport already sold here.

IMV Origin is a stranger thing, and arguably more interesting precisely because it isn't trying to look desirable. It's a stripped-back flatbed concept, also from the same Tokyo show, built on Toyota's IMV platform (the same underpinnings as the Hilux Champ sold in other markets) and designed to ship from the factory unfinished.

The idea, originally framed around rural Africa, is that local communities complete the build themselves: a cab, a roof, cargo racks, whatever the job calls for. It has nothing to do with the Malaysian market directly, but it's a good look at how Toyota thinks about mobility as infrastructure rather than just a product to sell.

Toyota Kids mobi is the concept most likely to get a reaction either way. It's a single-seat, fully autonomous electric pod built for children under 130cm tall, with an onboard AI companion called UX Friend meant to keep a child calm and entertained during the ride.

Toyota hasn't released specs, pricing, or a production timeline, and to be fair, a driverless pod ferrying a primary school kid around with no adult on board is still a long way from being road legal anywhere, Malaysia included. This is a concept in the truest sense, an idea Toyota wants people to react to, not something you'll see at school pick-up time anytime soon.

Toyota Malaysia is leaning hard on Toyota's Multi-Pathway approach (its way of saying it isn't betting the whole business on one type of powertrain) and on the bigger taglines, Mobility for All and Move Your World.

Strip that out and the practical story for Malaysia is this: UMW Toyota only brought its first proper EV trio to market in April 2026, the Urban Cruiser at RM198,000, the bZ4X facelift at RM220,000, and the Hilux BEV at RM226,300, while the hybrid side has carried the brand's electrification story for longer with the Corolla Cross Hybrid priced from RM133,800 up to RM148,800 for the GR Sport variant.

Those are the cars Malaysian buyers can actually finance and drive home this year. Rivals like BYD, Honda, Hyundai and Kia are all on the KLIMS 2026 floor too, pushing their own EV and hybrid lineups, so Toyota's pavilion is as much about staying visible in that conversation as it is about showing off concept cars.

UMW Toyota Motor President Datuk Ravindran K. framed the showcase this way:

"Toyota has been part of Malaysia's mobility journey for more than 60 years, and the trust we have built with customers continues to guide how we move forward. As mobility changes, our focus is to ensure that future ideas are not only exciting but also meaningful and relevant to people's everyday lives. At KLIMS 2026, we are showing how Toyota's vision for the future remains connected to practical choices customers can consider today, supported by the quality, durability, reliability and long-term confidence that customers have come to expect from the brand."

There's a GAZOO Racing corner too

For visitors who'd rather look at performance cars than concept pods, Toyota's GAZOO Racing (GR) section sits in the same pavilion, with GR performance models on display, a GR racing simulator, and a merchandise wall for fans. It's a smaller part of the showcase, but probably the corner most people will actually want to linger at.

If you're heading to KLIMS 2026 for the Toyota booth specifically, go in expecting a look at where the brand's design and mobility thinking is heading globally, not a preview of what's landing in Malaysian showrooms next quarter.

The real news for local buyers is still parked quietly at the edge of the pavilion: the bZ4X, Urban Cruiser, Hilux BEV and Corolla Cross Hybrid lineup that's already on sale in Malaysia.
