PDRM tests three Proton e.MAS models, possible patrol duties under consideration

KUALA LUMPUR: The Proton e.MAS range could eventually find work with the police. Before any decision is made, though, PDRM has three vehicles to try out and a few practical questions to answer.

PRO-NET, a subsidiary of PROTON, handed over an e.MAS 5 Premium, e.MAS 7 Premium and e.MAS 7 PHEV Premium Plus at Bukit Aman on 10 September 2026. PDRM will assess their suitability for its fleet, covering how they drive, how useful they are for the work involved and what charging arrangements they need.

The mix gives officers two fully electric models and a plug-in hybrid to work with. Feedback from their use will help PDRM understand which, if any, suits its requirements.

Gentari provides free charging during the trial

Gentari will cover charging for all three vehicles throughout the evaluation period. How long that period will last has not been disclosed.

There is a practical distinction here: free charging supports the trial, but PDRM will still need to assess the charging requirements of using these vehicles in its fleet.

The handover was carried out by PROTON Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid bin Musa, who presented the vehicles to CP Datuk Redzuan bin Abd Hamid, Director of PDRM’s Department of Logistics and Technology.

Abdul Rashid said:

“This evaluation with PDRM is a good opportunity for us to put our e.MAS vehicles into a real-world environment and allow the team to experience them beyond a conventional test drive. With the e.MAS 5, e.MAS 7 and e.MAS 7 PHEV, PDRM can experience different electrified powertrain options and assess how they perform and fit into their operational requirements.

“We understand that transitioning to EVs, particularly for a large fleet, involves more than just the vehicles themselves. It is also about understanding daily usage, performance and charging requirements. We are pleased to support PDRM through this evaluation, which will provide valuable insights into the usability and suitability of electrified vehicles for their requirements. As more government agencies explore electrified mobility, PRO-NET remains committed to working closely with our government partners and supporting Malaysia’s transition towards a more sustainable mobility ecosystem.”

Patrol use is on the table, but nothing has been decided

PRO-NET says the vehicles could eventually take on routine police duties, including crime-prevention patrols. That depends on the outcome of the assessment and future government considerations.

So, the handover is not confirmation of an incoming e.MAS patrol fleet. No wider order has been announced, and the release does not detail the assignments these three vehicles will receive during testing.

PRO-NET also reported more than 6,000 Proton e.MAS registrations in Malaysia as of 31 August 2026. The police trial asks a different question from private ownership: can these cars do the work required, with charging fitted around that work? PDRM’s experience with the three models should give it something concrete to base a decision on.
