Volvo EX30 Cross Country launched in Malaysia: RM218,888, AWD and 437 km range

KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo Car Malaysia has launched the locally assembled EX30 Cross Country, adding more ground clearance, twin-motor all-wheel drive and a tougher-looking exterior to its compact electric SUV.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much is the Volvo EX30 Cross Country in Malaysia?

The Volvo EX30 Cross Country costs RM218,888 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM218,648 in East Malaysia for private registration, without insurance. Volvo is offering the first 100 reservations a RM12,000 cash rebate, plus a complimentary wallbox, load carrier and roof basket.
  • What is different about the Volvo EX30 Cross Country compared with the EX30 Ultra?

The Cross Country has twin-motor all-wheel drive producing 428 hp and 543 Nm, 19 mm more ground clearance and specific exterior detailing. The MY27 Ultra uses a single rear motor producing 272 hp and 343 Nm, with a longer claimed WLTP range of 475 km. Its Peninsular Malaysian price starts at RM198,888 for private registration, without insurance.
  • Priced at RM218,888 without insurance for private registration in Peninsular Malaysia, the EX30 Cross Country sits RM20,000 above the updated EX30 Ultra. In East Malaysia, the corresponding Cross Country price is RM218,648.

The idea for the EV is quite simple: take the small footprint of the EX30 and give it a little more flexibility for trips beyond city roads. The changes include a 19 mm increase in ground clearance, revised steering software and 19-inch wheels with 235/50 tyres.

Volvo says the chassis and wheel setup are intended to improve comfort and stability on uneven surfaces. How that translates to Malaysian roads will have to wait for a drive, but there is more going on here than black cladding and a new badge.

There is also considerably more performance than the outdoorsy styling might suggest. The two electric motors produce a combined 428 hp and 543 Nm, with a claimed 0–100 km/h time of just 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 180 km/h.

A 69 kWh NMC battery, with 65 kWh of usable capacity, provides a claimed 437 km of WLTP range. Volvo quotes a 10–80% charging time of 27 minutes using a 175 kW DC rapid charger, although actual charging times depend on battery temperature, charger performance and other conditions.

For home charging, the Volvo quotes approximately eight hours for a full charge using an 11 kW AC wallbox.

The Cross Country name dates back to 1997, but this is Volvo’s first fully electric model to carry it. The Malaysian launch follows the same broad theme: a car for everyday use with additional features aimed at trips onto rougher roads.

Chris Wailes, Managing Director of Volvo Cars Malaysia and Thailand, said: “The adage that ‘life is full of adventures’ is so apt when we describe living in Malaysia because it is a country where you can find some of the oldest rainforests in the region just a few hours away from the tallest building the world. From weekend escapes to urban adventures, the EX30 Cross Country is not just simply a car, but a fully rounded experience for those who want the freedom to explore and the confidence to go anywhere”.

Visually, the Cross Country separates itself from the regular EX30 through matte black lower bumpers, wheel arch extensions and low-gloss Vapour Grey skid plates. There is Cross Country lettering on the C-pillars, an embossed CC logo at the rear and a matching low-gloss rear shield.

Malaysian buyers get three exterior colours: Crystal White, Vapour Grey and Cloud Blue.

Inside, the Indigo cabin combines charcoal woven textile and Nordico upholstery with denim decor panels and blue air vent panels. A panoramic roof is also fitted.

The familiar EX30 dashboard layout remains, with a 12.3-inch central touchscreen handling infotainment. Google Assistant, Google Maps and apps from the Google Play Store are built in, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also listed as standard equipment.

Audio comes through a Harman Kardon premium sound system. Its dashboard soundbar arrangement frees up space in the doors for larger storage compartments.

Other storage features include a central compartment between the front occupants that can accommodate a handbag, plus a removable box beneath the centre armrest that rear passengers can use for storage or as a waste bin.

The EX30 CC has 318 litres of luggage space with the rear seats upright, increasing to 718 litres with the second row folded. The powered tailgate also carries a “Will it Fit” graphic showing examples of items the boot can accommodate.

Buyers who need additional carrying options can choose accessories such as load carriers, a roof basket and a bicycle rack which Volvo Malaysia sells.

The safety equipment includes Pilot Assist, lane keeping assistance, blind spot monitoring with steering assistance, collision avoidance and mitigation, intersection automatic braking and rear cross traffic alert.

There is also a driver monitoring system, a door opening alert, Park Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera with a 3D view.

For the launch, Volvo is offering the first 100 reservations a RM12,000 cash rebate, alongside a complimentary Volvo Wallbox, load carrier and roof basket. The company values those items at RM3,990, RM2,098 and RM3,680 respectively.

The EX30 Cross Country is available for viewing at authorised Volvo dealerships nationwide. Warranty coverage listed includes five years with unlimited mileage for the vehicle and eight years or 160,000 km for the high-voltage battery, subject to terms and conditions.

Alongside the Cross Country launch, Volvo has announced updated pricing for the MY27 EX30 Ultra, which now costs RM198,888 without insurance for private registration in Peninsular Malaysia, or RM198,648 in East Malaysia.

The Ultra uses a single motor driving the rear wheels, producing 272 hp and 343 Nm. It completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in a claimed 5.3 seconds and offers up to 475 km of WLTP range from the same 69 kWh battery capacity.

Its colour choices are Crystal White, Vapour Grey, Cloud Blue and Onyx Black.

Volvo Car Malaysia has also introduced Digital Service Booking, allowing owners to arrange service appointments through its Malaysian website or the Volvo Cars app. The service is currently available through authorised retailers in the Klang Valley, with other regions planned to follow.
