What did Volvo win at the 2026 Malaysia Effie Awards?

Volvo’s results covered the main award, a brand award and several campaign categories:

    Award or category Result
    Grand Effie “Selamat is Volvo”
    Brand of the Year Volvo
    David vs. Goliath (Situational) Gold
    Automotive – Vehicles Bronze
    Multicultural – Products Finalist

The campaign began with a name Malaysians already knew, presented as a car brand they did not.

“Selamat” appeared on camouflaged vehicles, digital outdoor displays and social media, with Volvo’s identity initially kept out of the picture. The reveal eventually connected the mystery brand to Volvo and its longstanding focus on safety.

The idea drew on the word’s everyday use. Malaysians say “Selamat Pagi” and “Selamat Jalan” almost without thinking about it, while “selamat” on its own also means safe. That gave Volvo a familiar local starting point for a subject that car advertising often reduces to equipment lists.

Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, said:

" In a competitive market where every brand claim advanced technology, safety risks becoming just another feature - spoken about, but rarely felt. The objective of Selamat was never about making noise, but about placing human life back at the absolute core of mobility. To receive this level of recognition from the Effies is deeply humbling. It shows that when you approach an audience with genuine cultural empathy, that emotional connection naturally translates into meaningful, lasting impact."

The campaign’s central message was straightforward: protection becomes most relevant when something goes wrong. Volvo used that idea to connect its safety positioning with a word already embedded in Malaysian daily life.

Volvo worked with Invictus Blue, Grey Malaysia, Dox Digital, LAB Activations, Directors Think Tank and Live Experience on the campaign.

Grey Malaysia’s Chief Creative Officer, Graham Drew, explained the thinking behind the name:

“The creative ambition was to make ‘Selamat’ and Volvo feel inseparable. Selamat is a word Malaysians already know, use and understand instinctively, and Volvo has spent decades earning its association with safety. The idea was to bring those two truths together in a way that felt simple, surprising and culturally relevant — so that ultimately, Selamat itu Volvo, and Volvo itu Selamat.”

Getting people to speculate about Selamat before revealing Volvo was part of the media strategy. Content, creators and influencers helped build that initial curiosity.

Jo Yau, Group CEO of Invictus Blue, said:

“Our role was to take that powerful creative idea and strategically expand it into something audiences could discover, engage with and ultimately talk about. We designed the media activation around curiosity and conversation, using content, creators and influencers to build intrigue around Selamat before connecting it back to Volvo. By bringing media, content and culture together, we turned the idea into a conversation that travelled organically, driving virality and talkability for the brand.”

The campaign also included physical activities, from camouflaged vehicles around Kuala Lumpur to the Selamat Drive at Sepang and a Selamat Crash Car display.

These gave people something to see and experience beyond the campaign’s advertising.

Ian Lim of LAB Activations said:

“Safety can often feel theoretical on paper—until you see it, touch it, and experience it firsthand. From the mysterious camouflaged fleet turning heads across Kuala Lumpur to the precision of the Selamat Drive at Sepang and the striking visual reality of the Selamat Crash Car, our goal was to make protection tangible. Once drivers experienced that security in the real world, the true meaning of 'Selamat' didn't need explaining, it was felt both emotionally and physically.”

Online, the approach centred on encouraging discussion about what Selamat actually was.

Razlan Rahman of Dox Digital said:

“In a digital environment where audiences tune out branded messaging almost instantly, our focus was on cultivating genuine intrigue. We wanted to drive organic debate and community dialogue surrounding Selamat. Creating digital conversations was one of the key levers that helped turn a product campaign into a sustained cultural phenomenon."

Volvo says the Grand Effie win could open the door to international consideration for the campaign, although it has not announced a confirmed entry or further award.

Selamat will also remain part of Volvo Car Malaysia’s marketing plans. The company says it intends to follow up with safety education initiatives and more public activities, with details yet to be announced.
