Volvo Wallbox home charger now on sale in Malaysia at RM3,990

KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo Car Malaysia has launched its own home charging unit, the Volvo Wallbox, for owners who would rather plug in at home than chase down public chargers.

It is aimed at Volvo BEV and PHEV drivers in Malaysia who want a fixed setup in the garage instead of relying on a portable cable.

The unit handles charging speeds of up to 11 kW on a 3-phase installation, ships with a standard Type 2 cable, and carries an IP55 rating, so it can sit in an open carport or outdoors without issue.

The look is the usual minimalist Volvo styling, which will either matter to you or not depending on how much you care what a wall charger looks like.

Where it does the real work is the app side. The Wallbox connects to the Volvo Cars App over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or an optional SIM card, letting you check charging status, start and stop sessions, pull up your charging history, and set schedules to charge during cheaper off-peak hours.

Sun Qian, Head of Commercial Offer APeC at Volvo Cars, says: "Our commitment is to provide support to our customers at every single touchpoint of their ownership journey. The new Volvo Wallbox is fully integrated with the Volvo Cars App, which gives our drivers straightforward, intuitive control over not only their car, but their entire home charging setup, directly from their smartphones."

For households with more than one driver or a shared parking spot, the unit comes with two RFID cards so the owner can control who is allowed to use it.

There is also some future-proofing built in: it can hook up to an external energy meter, which means it can be configured to charge off excess solar power if you have panels on the roof.

On price, the Wallbox goes for RM3,990 at Volvo dealerships nationwide and comes with a 36-month hardware warranty. Installation is a separate cost, handled through Volvo's partner EV Connection Sdn Bhd, with packages starting from RM1,600.

So the realistic all-in figure for most buyers sits closer to RM5,590 before any tricky wiring pushes it higher.

For Malaysian buyers weighing it up, RM3,990 puts the Wallbox at the premium end of the home AC charging market. Plenty of third-party 11 kW wallboxes cost less, so part of what you are paying for is the brand and the app integration rather than the charging hardware itself.

The trade-off is that tight link with the Volvo Cars App, which the cheaper off-brand units can't match.
