Toyota’s electrified push: 10 new models across Asia and a battery that could change everything
KUALA LUMPUR: Although for now Toyota's a firm believer that Hybrids are the way forward, it doesn't mean they've stopped innovating and participating in current market trends.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Why has Toyota been slow to commit fully to EVs?
Toyota’s approach to EVs is based on practicality rather than hesitation. The company believes in matching technology with market readiness. While it continues to develop BEVs, Toyota’s priority is ensuring its batteries offer long lifespans, lower costs, and real-world usability across different markets. What makes Toyota’s solid-state battery special?
Toyota’s solid-state battery replaces the liquid electrolyte with a solid material, improving energy density, charging speed, and durability. The prototype shown at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 is claimed to deliver up to 1,200 km per charge, with significantly longer life compared to current lithium-ion batteries.Toyota is turning up the voltage on its electrification strategy. Over the next three years, the Japanese carmaker plans to introduce more than ten new electrified models across Asia — a mix that will include hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and, crucially, possibly a new generation of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

But don’t mistake Toyota’s measured pace for hesitation. It’s not that Toyota can’t go all-in on EVs. It’s that they’ve done the maths. Rather than rushing headlong into a market still grappling with charging infrastructure and cost barriers, Toyota is choosing a route it knows best — a pragmatic transition based on engineering readiness and long-term ownership value.
The Solid-State future
At the Japan Mobility Show 2025 post-event, Toyota showcased what could be the key to its next chapter: a prototype of its solid-state battery (SSB). On display was a compact, transparent module representing what Toyota claims will redefine EV range and durability.

According to Toyota, the solid state battery in development could offer more than 1,100 kilometres of range on a single charge — an astonishing leap from current EV standards.

In simple terms, solid-state technology can replaces the liquid electrolyte found in conventional batteries with a solid material, resulting in faster charging times, higher energy density, and far less degradation over repeated charge cycles.

Still, Toyota knows that the solid-state dream isn’t ready for mass production just yet, due to its cost Until then, its next-generation EVs will use improved lithium-ion batteries featuring a new structure with side-mounted terminals and a shorter cell height — an engineering change that helps reduce overall weight while freeing up interior space.
This two-track strategy — advancing solid-state for high-performance BEVs while refining lithium-ion for mainstream use — perfectly sums up Toyota’s cautious but calculated approach.
