SAIC's premium IM brand arrives in Malaysia with the IM6 electric SUV at KLIMS 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: SAIC Motor Malaysia used KLIMS 2026 to introduce a new brand name to the local market: IM, which stands for Intelligence in Motion.

This is not an MG. It sits above the MG lineup as a separate premium sub-brand under the SAIC umbrella, similar to how Zeekr operates within Geely.

The first model heading to Malaysia under the IM badge is the IM6, a fully electric D-segment coupe SUV that showed up at the SAIC booth on the opening day of the show.

Think of it as SAIC's answer to the BYD Sealion 7 or the XPENG G6, but positioned a rung higher in terms of price and intent. The IM6 is a big car, measuring 4,904mm long and 1,988mm wide, putting it squarely in the same territory as some proper full-size SUVs.

Inside, you get a panoramic glass roof, leather-style seats, and a tech-heavy cabin loaded with smart features including a nighttime camera system, semi-autonomous parking that can memorise and replay your parking manoeuvres, and a 20-speaker audio setup.

On the performance side, the IM6 is not messing around. The top-spec Performance AWD variant produces 572kW and 802Nm of torque, which is enough to hit 100km/h in 3.48 seconds.

To put that in perspective, that figure sits in the same conversation as a Lotus EVs. The standard rear-wheel-drive variant is considerably more sensible but still delivers a claimed WLTP range of up to 600km on a full charge.

SAIC Malaysia has confirmed the IM brand is targeting a Q3 2026 launch locally. Pricing has not been announced, but as a CBU import with no local assembly, expect it to land north of RM300,000 under current MITI regulations.

The IM6 is on static display at the KLIMS 2026 MG booth and remains on show until 21 June 2026, so if you want to check out the proportions and interior in person before pricing is confirmed, that is your window.
