Despite having a small footprint and compact dimensions, the Perodua Axia is a very spacious small hatchback which can put some hatchbacks one segment above to shame with its clever space levels on the inside. The tall boy stance does translate into a considerable amount of headroom, while at the same time, the Axia demonstrates segment-best legroom as well. Perodua has always been known for making the most economic cars in the respective segments, and the Axia being the smallest of them all, is the most fuel-efficient as well. The 1.0-litre petrol engine in the Perodua Axia promises a fuel economy of 22 kmpl, which easily outclasses all of its similarly priced competitors. The Perodua Axia might be a car meant solely for the masses who are out there for a car for the very first time. Despite this fact, the manufacturer has not compromised in equipping this car with features, and the Axia comes with some premium features like projector headlamps, touch screen infotainment system and push-button start-stop system. |
Despite being an entry-level compact sedan, the Perodua Bezza offers exceptional space levels, which are comparable to sedans from one segment above. The rear seat of the cabin is quite spacious, with excellent legroom, knee room and shoulder room for three full-sized adults. At the same time, the boot space offered by the Perodua Bezza too is best in its segment. The Perodua Bezza is offered with both the options of 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre petrol, both of which provide best-in-class fuel efficiency figures. The manual, as well as automatic variants in both the engines, deliver class-leading fuel economies of over 21kmpl, which is quite exceptional for a sedan of this class. For a compact sedan, the overall driving feel of the Perodua Bezza is quite convenient. The turning radius is lowest in the segment and coupling up with soft steering and suspension setup, the Bezza feels very light and easy to drive while tackling daily traffic conditions. |

For an entry-level compact urban hatchback, the Proton Iriz looks smart, unique and chic, especially from the front and rear. The Iriz was recently given a mild makeover, which has seen the car getting its front and rear ends tweaked with added styling elements, making it look very modern and trendy. Usually, the entry-level hatchbacks are equipped with only the basics to pass through the mandatory rules and regulations with ease. However, Proton has gone one step ahead and equipped the Iriz with segment-best safety features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, vehicle stability control, and front and rear parking sensors. The Proton Iriz is being offered with a punchy set of 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines, which feel quite powerful with nice surge of power across the entire rev range, especially the latter 1.6-litre mill. |
The Proton Saga is fairly big for a car of its price. The overall length and width of the car feel as big as a car from one segment above, giving it a feel of driving a bigger car. The bigger dimension of the Proton Saga on the outside clearly makes one feel pampered on the inside as well. The space levels inside the cabin are quite massive, with very impressive legroom and knee room at the rear. Apart from the space, another area which makes the inner occupants of the car feel comfortable is the plush ride quality. The suspension setup is on the softer side, which is comfortable for long drives as well. |

While the car manages to make you feel premium with its long list of feel-good comfort and convenience features, the overall design of the interior cabin and dashboard feel too sombre and plain. The center console, despite having a touch screen infotainment system, looks pretty dated in its visual appeal. On the outside too, the Perodua Axia fails to generate a very strong first impression. The little hatchback looks a bit dated, and the rear and side profiles of the car look very plain in general, which could have had a bit more visual drama. |
While the engines are exceptional in their purpose of delivering brilliant fuel economies, the small size of the engines also results in slightly lower performance outputs. Due to this reason, both the engines are not as exciting in their performance levels and driveability doesn’t inspire much of fun factor, which makes it quite dull to drive. The Perodua Bezza is purely for those who prefer function over form, which is quite evident from the way it has been styled in and out. The overall exterior look of the Bezza is quite bland by today’s standards. At the same time, the interior cabin of the car, which is decently loaded with comfort and convenience features, is not as modern and delightful as one would expect from a car of this class. |

While the exterior design of the Proton Iriz looks trendy and youthful, the same cannot be said about the interior cabin. The overall design of the dashboard looks plain, and if there was not the presence of a touch screen infotainment system inside, the dashboard would have looked dated as well. The compact dimensions of the Proton Iriz have taken a toll on the back seat comfort as well, as the rear part of the Iriz’s cabin lacks enough space for three full-sized adults. Also, the under-thigh support too is not up to the mark.

Going by the exterior looks, it is very clear that the Proton Saga is not a car from today’s generation. While the low slung stance makes it feel dynamic, the overall boxy profile is clearly not trendy and might not appeal to the young generation at least. Step inside the cabin and the dated feel of the car strengthens even more. The dashboard looks terribly dated and feels as if it belongs to two or three decades old. For a car of this price, the Proton Saga lacks a number of comfort and convenience features which the buyers of today’s generation take for granted. The lack of a proper touch screen audio system itself is a turn off for many buyers. |
