Malaysia to soon get 2019 National Automotive Policy
Malaysia will soon get an all-new National Automotive Policy; the said plan will be implemented in 3 phases. The 1st phase of the 2019 National Automotive Policy will ensure smooth implementation of NAP 2014 along with a few additional elements that’ll prepare Malaysia to become a manufacturer of energy-efficient vehicles (EEVs).
Datuk Madani Sahari, CEO Malaysia Automotive, Robotic and IoT Institute (MARii) said, “The first phase of NAP 2019 will emphasise on the improvement of policies to infuse with new technologies, including in terms of human capital and its competency.” Under the upcoming National Automotive Policy, MARii will be seen shifting its focus from EEV to next-generation vehicles (NxGV).
The phase one will focus on areas like the establishment of electrified vehicle charging stations, battery production, and management systems. Phase two and three, on the other hand, will focus on technological advancements like 5G connectivity.
As per the report, the main difference between NxGV and EVV is connectivity, wherein the former concentrates on AI (artificial intelligence) for mobility. Madani said, “Mobility-as-a-service is a new sector, therefore we cannot be left behind. Having said (that), it requires a lot of programming, big data analytics, the Internet of things (IoT), and many others.”
The NAP 2019 will also define the criteria for the national car. There are six criteria in total, they are -
- it has to be majority-owned by Malaysians
- receive funding from the public sector
- comprise of 75% local supply chain
- 98% of domestic workers
- have research and development conducted in Malaysia
- take steps “to follow NxGV as a service and the adaptation of Industrial Revolution 4.0”
The criteria mentioned above apply to national automakers - Proton and Perodua along with the new national car that is currently being developed. Also, the new national car is expected to boost the business of local vendors.
The full definition of NxGV as per NAP 2019 would be ready by early 2022 with its implementation to start in 2025.
