The new Royal Enfield Classic 350 is here to talk Malaysia's riders out of the horsepower race

You know the Sunday morning Karak crowd. Litre bikes screaming past in full tuck, chasing whoever's fastest in the group, reach Bentong, one teh tarik, turn around, home by 11. Ask any of them what the road actually looked like that day and we'd bet money they couldn't tell you.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much is the Royal Enfield Classic 350 in Malaysia?

The Classic 350 is priced from RM23,500 to RM24,800 in Malaysia, depending on colour. Madras Red and Jodhpur Blue open the range, while the Chrome Emerald flagship tops it.
  • What engine does the Royal Enfield Classic 350 use?

It runs a 349 cc air-oil cooled single cylinder engine making 20.2 hp at 6,100 rpm and 27 Nm at 4,000 rpm, paired with a five-speed gearbox.
  • We've never been part of that pack, but we'll admit the mindset rubs off. More power is better. Faster is the point. It's how most of us have been trained to read a spec sheet.

Which is why the new Royal Enfield Classic 350, just launched in Malaysia from RM23,500, is such an interesting thing to explore. Because on paper it looks like it's losing an argument. Twenty horsepower? In 2026? A kapchai with a full exhaust makes similar numbers on a good day.

Except the Classic 350 isn't in that argument. It's making a completely different pitch, and the more we look at it, the more we think it might be the right pitch for how Malaysia actually rides.

    The case for 20 horsepower

The numbers first. It's a 349 cc air-oil cooled single making 20.2 hp at 6,100 rpm and 27 Nm at 4,000 rpm, through a five-speed gearbox. Kerb weight is 195 kg. Nothing in that sentence will win a traffic light drag.

But look at where that torque arrives. Four thousand rpm. That's an engine designed to be ridden low in the revs, short-shifted, left in third gear on a back road while you get on with the business of actually being there. Royal Enfield has been refining this long-stroke thump for decades, and the whole point of it is that the engine sets a pace rather than demanding one.

And here's the thing about Malaysian roads that the horsepower race conveniently ignores. The best ones aren't highways. The old trunk road to Kuala Kubu Bharu, the run out to Sekinchan through the paddy fields, the climb up to Fraser's Hill. These are 70 to 100 km/h roads, full of corners and kampungs and things worth slowing down for. A superbike is bored stiff on them. A Classic 350 is in its natural habitat.

That's the pitch. Not "how fast can you get there" but "what if the ride was the destination". It's a philosophy about seven decades of Royal Enfield owners have already signed up for, and Malaysia's back roads make an unusually strong case for it.

Updated where it counts, untouched where it matters

The 2026 refresh is refreshingly restrained. No TFT screen, no ride modes, no traction control settings you'll never touch. Instead, Royal Enfield fixed the actual daily annoyances.

The headlamp and pilot lamp are now LED, which matters because halogen lighting on retro bikes has traditionally been more decoration than illumination. There's finally a gear position indicator on the cluster, ending the time-honoured Enfield ritual of stomping down twice at a red light to make sure you're in first. And there's a Type-C USB charging port, because it's 2026 and your navigation lives on your phone.

Go for the Dark series or the Chrome Emerald and you also get the Tripper navigation pod, adjustable levers and LED indicators as standard fitment.

None of it changes the bike's character. All of it makes the bike easier to live with. That's how updates should work.

And it points at what might be the Classic's quiet party trick. It looks like a weekend indulgence, but the recipe underneath is thoroughly practical: an easygoing, torquey engine for the daily commute, an upright riding position that doesn't punish you in traffic, and now the small conveniences sorted too. One bike for the Monday grind and the Saturday morning escape, which for a lot of Malaysian riders is exactly the maths that matters.

Five colours, and for once they genuinely matter

With most bikes the colour chart is an afterthought. With the Classic, the paint is half the purchase decision, so it's worth going through the range properly.

Madras Red and Jodhpur Blue open things at RM23,500, both proper heritage shades straight out of the 1950s. Medallion Bronze at RM23,700 is the one for people who use the word "patina" unironically. Commando Sand (RM24,400) brings the military dispatch rider look and will probably be the conversation starter of the range.

Gun Grey and Stealth Black (RM24,700) make up the Dark series for those who like their nostalgia with a bit of menace. And the flagship Chrome Emerald at RM24,800 is deep green over actual mirror chrome, the kind of finish your grandfather would have polished every Sunday whether it needed it or not.

    The boring but important bit

At RM23,500 to RM24,800, this is one of the more attainable ways into a proper full-sized motorcycle with genuine heritage behind it. But the number that deserves more attention is the one that isn't on the price list.

Every variant comes with a 3-year unlimited-mileage warranty, and it's borderless, meaning the coverage follows you across the Thai border. Given that half the riding groups in Malaysia treat the Hatyai run as a quarterly pilgrimage, that's not brochure filler. That's warranty coverage where people actually ride. There's a genuine accessories range too, for anyone planning to build one into a proper tourer.

The Classic 350 won't be for everyone, and it isn't trying to be. It's slow by modern standards, it's 195 kg, and if your riding happiness is measured in top speed, nothing here will convert you.

But there's a growing number of Malaysian riders quietly stepping off the horsepower treadmill. Riders who've noticed that their most memorable rides were never their fastest ones. For them, a motorcycle that looks like this, is built like this, and costs RM23,500 with a borderless three-year warranty is a genuinely tempting proposition.

Because in the end, the new Classic 350 asks Malaysia's riders a question worth sitting with: when was the last time you took the long way home on purpose?

The new Royal Enfield Classic 350 is now available in Malaysia, priced from RM23,500 to RM24,800. Buyers also get peace of mind in the form of a 3-year, unlimited-mileage borderless warranty and complimentary 3-years RSA.
