New Yamaha Tricity 300 debuts as world's first scooter with airbags

KUALA LUMPUR: Yamaha has rolled out the world's first scooter with airbags, called Tricity 300. It is a three-wheeled scooter that features the new-generation airbag system developed by Autoliv, one of the world’s largest suppliers of automotive safety systems. 

Back in 2023, Autoliv announced its ambitious plans to install airbags on affordable two-wheelers to bring advanced crash protection to everyday commuters. Fast forward to today, here comes the 2026 Yamaha Tricity 300 as the first production scooter with an Autoliv airbag. 

How does the scooter’s airbag system work?

Integrated in the front apron of the vehicle, the airbag system can detect sudden impacts using advanced sensors and deploy during frontal collisions to prevent riders from being thrown forward and protect them from impact with hard components like handlebars. The company has tested the said system using advanced simulations and crash testing, in line with standard development standards. 

Developed with everyday usability in mind, the airbag system does not affect the storage space and practicality of the vehicle, claims Yamaha.   

"This collaboration represents a key development beyond our core business. It contributes to our future growth, and it is an important step in delivering on our long-term strategic agenda. It also marks a significant advancement in safeguarding motorcyclists, who traditionally have far less protection than occupants in light vehicles," said Mikael Bratt, President and CEO, Autoliv.

New Yamaha Tricity 300: Key highlights

• Alongside the revolutionary airbag system, the all-new Yamaha Tricity 300 benefits from modern styling, improved features and enhanced riding experience. 
• It comes powered by a 292-cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine and a CVT automatic transmission, delivering smooth and reliable performance.

• The feature kit includes a 4.2-inch colour TFT display with built-in Garmin navigation and smartphone connectivity, an advanced braking system with cornering ABS, full LED lighting, and a 45 -litre under-seat storage compartment.

The Yamaha Tricity 300 with built-in airbag system is expected to hit the global markets in the second half of 2026.
