Yamaha YZF-R2 revealed as the brand’s newest R Series motorcycle
KUALA LUMPUR: Yamaha has added an exciting model to its iconic R-series portfolio, called the YZF-R2. Globally unveiled in India, the latest R model is Yamaha’s first offering in the highly competitive 200-cc segment and is positioned above the popular YZF-R15.

Race-inspired design
Inspired by Yamaha's latest global R-series motorcycles, the YZF-R2 boasts a sharp, aerodynamic design with distinctive super sport styling and sculpted bodywork. At the front lies a compact bi-functional LED headlight with dual LED position lights and an R9-inspired sculpted front fairing. Adding to its sporty character is a block-style LED taillight and a MotoGP-enthused swingarm.
New platform
The new Yamaha R model is built on a new platform, which focuses on lightweight agility and improved handling. It features a newly developed high-tensile steel tube diamond frame and the new frame geometry optimised for natural and intuitive handling across different riding conditions. The suspension setup comprises 37 mm upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock.
New 204-cc engine
The Yamaha YZF-R2 is powered by a new 204-cc, liquid-cooled DOHC, single-cylinder engine, which generates segment-leading 26.5 PS of maximum power and 19.1 Nm of peak torque. This newly-developed powertrain features an R1-derived finger-follower valvetrain with Diamond-Like Carbon coating, which helps in reducing friction and improving efficiency and responsive, free-revving performance.
Smart connectivity & riding modes
The YZF-R2 is also equipped with a host of advanced technologies, including a 5-inch full-colour TFT display, Smart Key System, 3 riding modes (Street, Sport and Rain), Yamaha Ride Control, traction control and dual-channel ABS.
Three variants, five colour options
The all-new YZF-R2 is offered in three variants across five distinctive colour options.
- Base-spec: Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Grey, with black wheels and a matte-finished seat.
- Mid-spec: Adds body-coloured wheels, special graphics, premium finishes and the segment-first bi-directional Quick Shifter; available in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue.
- Top-spec YZF-R2M: It comes in an exclusive Metallic Grey shade, featuring the Quick Shifter, faux-suede seat, a 3D embossed emblem, silver swingarm and special muffler end cap.
