All-new Mercedes GLE gets diesel powertrain

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes unveiled the all-new GLE in September, earlier this year. However, back then the GLE was presented with a single powertrain which was a turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-six. The variant was called GLE 450 and had a maximum power of 362 PS and a peak torque of 500 Nm in its arsenal. Mercedes now has introduced two diesel variants namely GLE 350 d and GLE 400 d.

Both the GLE 350 d and the GLE 400 d house a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline-six engine. However, the power figures differ in the two models. The GLE 350 d gets 272 PS and 600 Nm out of the inline-6, whereas the GLE 400 d receives 330 PS and a 700 Nm from the same mill. The two new diesel variants also feature the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and a 9-speed automatic transmission as seen on the gas-fed GLE 450.

The new diesel variants offer a fuel economy of up to 17 km per litre. If we talk about speed, the GLE 350 d and the GLE 400 d can do a 0-100 kmph run in 6.9 seconds and 5.8 seconds, respectively. The top speeds of the two do not differ by too much, the GLE 350 d can reach up to 230 kmph and the GLE 400 d can take you to 240 kmph if you have got a stretch long enough.

Just like the GLE 450, the new GLE 350 d and GLE 400 d also feature MBUX, the newest infotainment system by the German automaker. The MBUX also comes equipped with intelligent voice control. Other features on the new models include LED headlights with active high beam assist, four-zone automatic climate control, 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, blind spot assist, third-row seating, and electrically-adjustable second-row seats.

There also a Tech Package on offer which offers smartphone integration and improved navigation. Park assist for trailers and trailer coupling with electronic stability control can be had with the Towing Package. Furthermore, the Premium Plus package brings along a Burmester audio system, panoramic glass roof, in-car fragrances, and keyless-go access. There is also an Off-road Package which includes off-road driving modes, improved underbody protection, and hill-descent control. Don't forget to check out the Mercedes lineup available in Malaysia.
