Recent Updates of Proton Perdana

Proton has recalled a batch of Proton Perdana for replacing the potentially faulty passenger airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. A total number of 6,342 cars have been recalled, all of which were built within a timeframe ranging from the year 2012 to the end of August 2018. The company has stated in an official release that it is a precautionary measure. The reason behind this recall is the fact that the second generation Perdana along with the pre-facelift model is based on the Honda Accord, a car which was involved in the global Takata service fix as well. The car comes with two engine variants - 2.0L and 2.4L. Both of them are powered by a 4-cylinder 16 valve DOHC engine with an engine displacement of 1997 and 2354 cc respectively. The engines deliver a maximum power output of 158 hp and 178 hp respectively along with peak torque of 189 Nm and 222 Nm respectively.

Overview

The Proton Perdana is an artistic model from the fleet of the Malaysia-based automaker. It has been designed to captivate the onlookers and please the buyers with sophistication and elegance. Its aerodynamic flair, sloped roof and busy rear section provide it a distinctive look that imparts an unmistakable presence. The cabin is quite upmarket that wears an elegant upholstery accented with fine wood grain trim and black moulding. The cabin amenities contributing to occupants comfort and convenience are immense. With two petrol engines on offer, it not only adds variety to its lineup but offers a choice for customers too. In the Malaysian automobile market, the Perdana locks horns with the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic.

Interior & Features

The stunning exteriors of the Perdana are matched by an exquisite interior, which is an ideal blend of craftsmanship and function. While the multi-contoured leather seats provide the utmost comfort, the fine wood grain trim and black moulding add to the warmth and coziness of the cabin. The rear seats are as comfortable as the front ones. There is tremendous space inside the cabin for the occupants of varied size and height to feel relaxed. It boasts a generous headroom and legroom that adds to the convenience. The sliding adjustable armrest with storage/console compartment provides an added comfort to the driver. At the back, there is a rear seat armrest with cup holder and truck access which comes in handy at times. Equipment-wise, it gets a multi-function steering wheel, Proton infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB, AUX-in, MP3, WMA, CD, DVD, CD-R support and a 6.2-inch TFT touchscreen. It also gets a touchscreen advanced GPS navigation system with voice control which is, however, only available on the top-end variant. Other than these, it features a dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power driver seat, 4-way passenger seat (only with 2.4L Perdana), six speakers, auto cruise control and rear foldable seats.

Exterior

The exteriors of Proton Perdana are impressive from the word go. The aerodynamic flair is complemented by the sharp and sleek lines. The wrap-around HID/halogen headlamps with LED DRLs up front, chrome wing-like bar on the grille and distinctive Proton Wings lower down the front bumper make up for the Perdana’s dominating profile. The side profile gets sleek character lines, ORVMs with turn signals, sloping roof and 17-inch alloy wheels that are finished in dual-tone for the 2.4L variant and in single-tone for the 2.0L. The wrap-around LED tail lights are positioned handsomely on the busy rear section, which constitutes of chrome accents, a diffuser panel, shark-fin antenna and unreal body-coloured exhaust tips. Suspension duties on the Perdana are handled by independent double wishbone with coil spring and stabilizer at the front while at the rear it comes with independent multi-link with coil spring and stabilizer. The 17-inch alloy wheels are shod with 225/50 R17 tyres on both the variants. It boasts a wheelbase of 2,800mm and a kerb weight of 1,510kg for 2.0L and 1,535kg for the 2.4L variant. The increased weight is due to the presence of the bodykit that includes a low swept spoiler and front and rear skirting. Additionally, the 2.4L Perdana is 21mm longer than its small-engined sibling, again due to bodykit. The customers can choose from seven different colours - Midnight Black, Sterling Silver, Cotton White, Graphite Grey, Ruby Red, Citrine Gold and Silver Moon Dust, irrespective of the variant they opt for.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Perdana is available in two variants and two engine options - 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre. While the former 2.0L Perdana is powered by a 1997cc SOHC four-cylinder engine that churns out a max power of 160PS at 6,300rpm and a peak torque of 189Nm at 4,300rpm, the other 2.4L variant uses a 2354cc four-cylinder DOHC power mill with power and torque rated at 180PS at 6,500rpm and 222Nm at 4,300rpm respectively. Both the variants come mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox. It returns a fuel economy of around 13kmpl. The higher-end variant comes with paddle shifters for smooth and quick gear shifting. The transmission is smooth yet robust, good to offer you driving thrills. Its sharper steering response and reliable suspension add to the way it manages on the road. The steering adjusts itself to being lighter in the city and heavier on highways for better stability and control.

Braking & Safety

A full suite of safety features is on offer with the Proton Perdana that not only adds confidence but the much-needed peace of mind. It features four airbags (dual front and dual side), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Auto Levelled Headlamps, Park Assist System with front and rear parking sensors, Anti-trap Front Power Windows, seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiter system, ISOFIX child seat anchors and reverse camera as standard while the higher end variant get an additional advantage with Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Verdict

Based on the Mitsubishi Eterna, the Proton Perdana is a good car, so there’s nothing major to worry about. Rest, its exact specifications release will only decide its performance and market share in Malaysia.

PROTON PERDANA- DRIVE TO PLEASE YOURSELF

My experiences with sedans have not been very good by far, either they were too stylish for me or too boring to drive.
